  1. Christian Italia New Castle Jr./Sr. High School 10th Grade 2nd year of PJAS Battle of the Times

  2. Observation • While I was doing my PJAS last year, I tested to see if people’s reaction times improved after playing videogames. I found out that their reaction times did improve, so that made me wonder if adults who play videogames within the month would be able to type a paragraph faster than those who haven’t played within the month.

  3. Hypothesis • If adults played a videogame within the month, their time to type a paragraph would be faster than adults who haven’t played within the month.

  4. Research • The very act of playing action videogames significantly reduces reaction times without sacrificing accuracy. Video gaming may therefore provide an efficient training regimen to induce a general speeding of perceptual reaction times without decreases in accuracy of performance.

  5. Variables • Independent – The adult plays videogames or not • Dependent – How quickly the adult types the paragraph

  6. Materials • Timer • iPhone using the Notes app • Short paragraph

  7. Procedures • Show adult how to type with the iPhone. • Give paragraph to adult and tell them to retype it, ending each sentence with a period, and tell them not to worry about spelling. • As soon as they start, start the timer. • Stop timer when they’re done and ask if they have played videogames within the last month. If yes, put time under Plays Videogames category. If no, put time under Doesn’t Plays Videogames category.

  8. Data (in seconds)

  9. Possible Errors • The adult played a videogame when the adult said they haven’t played videogames. • The adult could’ve been put in the wrong group.

  10. Conclusion • In conclusion, my hypothesis was incorrect. The average time for adults who play videogames was longer than the average time for adults that don’t play videogames. I think this happened because there were certain adults who type more than others and were better acquainted to typing.

  11. Further Research • If I were to do this project again, I would have the adult use an actual keyboard instead of my iPhone. • I would have the adult type the paragraph, play a videogame, and type the paragraph again to see if playing a videogame recently would improve their time.
