Welcome To VMS Athletics

Welcome to VMS Athletics for the 2019-2020 school year! Our goals include positive coaching, teaching our community to honor the game, and respecting the rules, opponents, officials, teammates, and oneself. We offer a variety of sports throughout the year, including football, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, basketball, track, and tennis. We prioritize concussion education and have implemented laws and protocols to ensure the safety of our athletes. We also rely on fundraising and parent support to meet our financial needs. Stay informed about schedules, eligibility, and other important information on our website.

  16. Concussion Laws • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIqZDbk3M40 (2 min)

  17. Idaho Concussion Legislation • (1) Education for middle school, junior high, and high school athletes and parents prior to each sports season. • Coaches, referees, game officials, and ATC’s shall review guidelines and information upon hire. • (2) Schools shall obtain written consent from parents of youth athlete • (3) If during a practice or game, it is reasonably suspected that a youth athlete has sustained a concussion or head injury they should be removed from play

  18. Idaho Concussion Legislation • (4) Return to play requirement – must be cleared by an appropriate medical provider: -Physician or physician assistant -Advanced Practice Nurse (NP) -Licensed healthcare professional trained in the management of concussion under the supervision of a directing physician • (5) Students who have sustained a concussion and return to school, may need informal or formal accommodations when returning to school. A student athlete should be able to resume all normally scheduled academic activities without restrictions prior to receiving authorization to return to play by a qualified health care professional • (6) If an individual reasonably acts in accordance with the protocol developed pursuant to subsection 5, then acting upon such protocol shall not form the basis of a claim for negligence in a civil action. • (7) Any youth sport organization or association in this state may comply with this section, if in full compliance with this section, they will be afforded the same protections from liability.

  19. Purpose of the Law • Educate coaches, parents & athletes. • Coaches re-certify every year. • Remove athletes from play. • Obtain permission to return to play. • Once a physician allows return to play (law), we still have to follow the NFHS (rule) of Gradual Return. • Athlete must be asymptomatic before beginning Gradual Return to Play. • “Cleared by a Physician” does not mean full competition. We follow the 6 step plan.

  20. Graduated Return to Play Action Plan Stepwise progression allows the athlete 24 hours between each step without symptoms

  21. Concussions • We refer to family doctors. They will refer to concussion clinic if necessary. • Concussions tend to resolve in 7-10 days, unless you are under the age of 18. Sometimes takes about 3 weeks to resolve. • Whether or not there is a loss of consciousness, is not a good indicator of severity or necessary recovery time.

  22. Functional (chemical) not structural
