  3. Statistics • A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds. • 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. • 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. • More than 5 children die each day from child abuse.

Statistics continued • In more than 90% of sexual abuse cases the child and the child’s family know and trust the abuser. • The median age for reported sexual abuse is 9 years old. • Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.

  5. Reminders • Avoid one-adult/one-child situations as much as possible. • Be careful of situations when older children have access to younger children. Multiple adults should be present to supervise. • Monitor children’s internet use. • Drop in unexpectedly when a child is alone with an adult even if the adult is trusted.

  6. Reminders • Children will sometimes tell a trusted adult other than a parent that abuse is happening. • Children may tell a portion of what happened or pretend it happened to someone else to gauge our reaction. • Children will shut down if you respond emotionally or negatively.

  7. Signs of Abuse • Physical signs – bruises, broken bones, rashes, swelling, physical signs associated with anxiety, etc. • Emotional signs – these can run from a “too perfect” behavior, to withdrawal and depression, to unexplained anger and rebellion. • Sexual behavior and language that are not age appropriate.

  8. What to do if you suspect abuse? • You are a state mandated reporter. If you suspect child abuse then you need to call the Department of Social Services. • In York County call (803) 909-7446 or • (803) 684-2315 • Let the child’s guidance counselor know about it as well. • The guidance counselor can walk you through the process, but you have to make the phone call. • D.S.S. will keep your name confidential.
