  1. Commas, Colons, and Semicolons

  2. Commas: 1. Separate items in a series. 2. Set off interrupting information. , Examples Will there be drinks, snacks, and games at the party? Chicago, the largest city in Illinois, is home to almost three million people.

  3. Interrupting Information Nonessential phrases may come at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence. Examples On a beautiful spring day, they had a picnic. Picnics, an old tradition, can be considerable fun. Dad grilled ribs, the large ones from Costco. The guy who sold them to him smiled.

  4. Semicolons Semicolons join independent clauses. It’s also like using the word furthermore. ; Examples My mom said I couldn’t go to the party; I didn’t want to go anyway. Bananas are a healthy snack; they contain potassium which may help your vision.

  5. Semicolons In a complicated list, semicolons are used to separate items in a series. Examples My heroes are Batman, who combines brains and brawn; Captain Picard, who commands respect; and Wiley Coyote, who never gives up.

  8. Colons Colons introduce lists and explanations. It’s also like using the words “and here it is” or “and here they are.” : Examples There are many reasons to exercise: it’s good for your health, it’s fun, and it’s free.

  9. From “The Censors” Pg. 90 Line 55-57 “After work, one of them tried to organize a strike to demand higher wages for unhealthy work, but Juan didn’t join in; after thinking it over, he reported him to his superiors an thus got promoted.” Why is a semi-colon necessary in this sentence?
