Background: LENVIS Project BALWOIS 2010
LENVIS4alllocalised environmental information services for alluser-centric collaborative decision support network for water and air quality management
Project goals Main goal: to develop an innovative collaborative Decision Support Network (DSN) for exchange of environmental and health information between all stakeholders to assess population exposure and health risks and improve the management of ecosystems. Health indicators as integral part of the environmental management. Provision of location-based services linked to the state of the environment at particular geographical locations. Generic ICT solution that combines Service Oriented Architecture) SOA and user-centric Peer to Peer (P2P) approach by fusion of location-based environmental and health data, information and modelling services. Validated through test cases Netherlands, Portugal and Italy Arnold BALWOIS 2010

Google Android Mobile Phone Platform BALWOIS 2010
Smart phones • iPhone with its own platform for developing and deploying applications • Android – Google supported platform, increasingly deployed on more mobile devices • Other: RIM BlackBerry, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Nokia Symbian….Java Micro Edition • Open competition BALWOIS 2010
Android platform • Google backed - open source • Running on Linux kernel (Dalvik VM) • Programming in java • Optimised for mobile devices • Community based development “Android to grab No. 2 spot by 2012” Computerworld, 13th October,2009 Prediction for a surge to 14% of global smart phone market - ahead of IPhone as well as WM and BB. Currently less than 2%. More large companies HTC, LG Motorola, Samsung release their own sets recently. BALWOIS 2010
Brabantse delta Dommel Case studies: Dommel catchment Brabantse delta BALWOIS 2010
Mobile phone / web interfaces • Users: • Water professionals • Trained volunteers • Citizens • Web services: • Monitored data -historical • Current water quality status • Forecasts • Data updates from field • Information contributed by users Internet Water quality Model results; Forecasts Monitored water quality information Databases General approach BALWOIS 2010
Dommel catchment • Dommel experiences water quality problems: • Agricultural runoff (nutrients, N, P) • Untreated waste water from cities • Previously developed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for WQ assessment and testing of remedial measures • The results from the SWAT model – deployed on the Android Phone (G1) • First tests with Android BALWOIS 2010
Dommel catchment BALWOIS 2010
Dommel catchment BALWOIS 2010
Brabantse delta • Water Quality problems in some of the lakes in the area used for swimming and bathing • Need for information forecasting and alerting system on bathing water quality BALWOIS 2010
Mobile phone Web site HTTP request / response Web server: Server-side PHP scripts Model-based Water Quality Forecasts Monitored data Users contributions (text, images) Brabantse delta BALWOIS 2010
Brabantse delta BALWOIS 2010
Brabantse delta Layar: • Augmented Reality (AR) Browser, Android mobile phone application that provides real time digital information layer on the actual view mobile phone camera. • Extensive use of GPS. BALWOIS 2010
Brabantse delta Modelled WQ data on the web • MOHID model developed for one lake • Distribution of pollution (harmful algae due to pumping from neighbouring lake BALWOIS 2010
Conclusions • Applications with diverse functionalities • Technologies continuously changing • …especially for mobile phone development • Google Android – powerful platform • Testing phase with real users will follow in the second half of LENVIS project BALWOIS 2010
