6. DIBELS – What’s that? • The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills. • They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. • FSF (First Sound Fluency) and LNF (Letter Naming Fluency) are the tests that the kindergarten students will be assessed on at the beginning of the year. • FSF is identifying the first sounds of words. (ie. Cat is /c/) • LNF is simply calling out each letters name in a random order. • DIBELS is given 3 times a year. • August, January, May

7. Phonics Skill Development Each level of Fundations presents skills in a carefully structured scope and sequence. These build on previously taught skills and are brought forward cumulatively: from unit to unit, year to year • Letter Formation • Phonological and Phonemic Awareness • Sound Mastery • Phonics • Vocabulary • Irregular (Trick) Word Instruction • Fluency • Comprehension • Teaches foundational concepts rather than memorization, provides a strong foundation for Reading, Writing, and Spelling • Unit Tests • Repetition, practice, scaffolding (one concept builds up to another, ongoing throughout the year) • Please be flexible and trust us!

8. Math in Focus What is Singapore Math? “Singapore math” is the term used to refer to the mathematics curriculum used in Singapore. For over 15 years, Singapore has consistently scored at the top of international mathematics comparison studies. Its unique approach to teaching math — which focuses on problem solving, deep understanding, and model drawing — has helped Singapore students excel, and now U.S. students have the same opportunity to benefit from this proven curriculum! Math in Focus® is the U.S. edition of Singapore’s most widely used program. It teaches the same content as traditional mathematics programs — just in a way that emphasizes understanding and flexible thinking. Math in Focus will teach your children both how and why math works. This deep understanding means that they will be better able to use math in real-life situations.

10. Tax Credit Tax credit donations are 100% tax deductible from your state tax return. This means, that your child can have FREE field trips, school events and graduation. Anyone can donate in the name of your child or to their classroom. This includes grandparents, aunts, uncles and close family friends. Maximum donation is $400 per married couple (file jointly) or $200 single tax payer. We are requesting a minimum of $100 per child to cover the expenses of the below listed items. This fee can be paid in full or in four equal increments of $25.00. All monies need to be paid in full by December 31, 2014 so it can be claimed on your 2014 Tax return. All kindergartners will participate in all of the above events unless your child is a half day student.

11. Enrichment Fee The enrichment fee is a one time $600.00 fee. This fee is necessary because the state of Arizona only allots monies for a half day kindergarten program. This fee allows your child to attend a full day program which includes but is not limited to: special area classes, field trips, enrichment activities, intervention programs
