Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn: God is love: let heaven adore Him; LHS 394 CAL 293 Timothy Rees (1874-1939), alt.
God is love: let heaven adore Him 1. God is love: let heaven adore Him; God is love: let earth rejoice; Let creation sing before Him, And exalt Him with one voice. he who laid the earth’s foundation, He who spread the heavens above, He who breathes through all creation, He is love, eternal love.
God is love: let heaven adore Him 2. God is love: and He enfoldeth All the world in one embrace; With unfailing grasp He holdeth Every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking Under sorrow’s iron rod, All the sorrow, all the aching, Wrings with pain the heart of God.
God is love: let heaven adore Him 3. God is love: and though with blindness Sin afflicts the souls of men, God’s eternal loving-kindness Holds and guides them even then. Sin and death and hell shall never O’er us final triumph gain; God is love, so love for ever O’er the universe must reign. †
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: In the Large Catechism, Martin Luther teaches that Baptism remains forever. Even though we fall from it and sin, nevertheless we always have access to it .
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION But we need not again have the water poured over us. Even if we were immersed in water a hundred times, it would nevertheless be only one baptism, and the effect and significance of baptism would continue and remain.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Repentance, therefore, is nothing else than a return and approach to baptism, to resume and practise what had earlier been begun but abandoned.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION So, brothers and sisters in Christ: let us draw near to God our Father, to repent of our sins, and, in the name of the Lord Jesus, claim again the forgiveness we received in baptism.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. C: Amen.
greeting M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for strength in temptation. C: Almighty and merciful God, your Son fasted in the desert and was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Protect us when we are tempted, and help us to resist the devil by trusting in your word.
PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST READING R: The first Reading for the First Sunday in Lent is written in Chapter 9 of Genesis beginning at Verse 8. Genesis 9:8-17 God's covenant with Noah CEV
Genesis 9:8-17 8Again, God said to Noah and his sons: 9I am going to make a solemn promise to you and to everyone who will live after you. 10This includes the birds and the animals that came out of the boat. 11I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.
Genesis 9:8-17 12-13The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever. 14When I send clouds over the earth, and a rainbow appears in the sky, 15I will remember my promise to you and to all other living creatures.
Genesis 9:8-17 Never again will I let floodwaters destroy all life. 16When I see the rainbow in the sky, I will always remember the promise that I have made to every living creature. 17The rainbow will be the sign of that solemn promise. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 25:1-10 CEV R: The Psalm is PSALM 25 1I offer you my heart, LORD God, 2and I trust you. C: Don't make me ashamed or let enemies defeat me.
Psalm 25:1-10 CEV R: 3Don't disappoint any of your worshipers, but disappoint all deceitful liars. C: 4 Show me your paths and teach me to follow; 5 guide me by your truth and instruct me.
Psalm 25:1-10 CEV R: You keep me safe, and I always trust you. C: 6 Please, LORD, remember, you have always been patient and kind.

Psalm 25:1-10 CEV R: 10In everything you do, you are kind and faithful to everyone who keeps our agreement with you. C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Second reading R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 3 of First Peter, beginning at Verse 18. 1 Peter 3:18-22 The flood a symbol of baptism CEV
1 Peter 3:18-22 18Christ died once for our sins. An innocent person died for those who are guilty. Christ did this to bring you to God, when his body was put to death and his spirit was made alive.
1 Peter 3:18-22 19Christ then preached to the spirits that were being kept in prison. 20They had disobeyed God while Noah was building the boat, but God had been patient with them. Eight people went into that boat and were brought safely through the flood.
1 Peter 3:18-22 21Those flood waters were like baptism that now saves you. But baptism is more than just washing your body. It means turning to God with a clear conscience, because Jesus Christ was raised from death.
1 Peter 3:18-22 22Christ is now in heaven, where he sits at the right side of God. All angels, authorities, and powers are under his control. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
C: ♫ Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord?Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Words: African-American Spiritual
