  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin And cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done And by what we have failed to do.»

  16. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We have not loved you with our whole heart, And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. »

  17. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  18. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do.

  19. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? C: I do.

  20. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God’s presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy? C: I do.

  21. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

  27. GREETING M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

  28. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for endurance. C: Jesus, our guide and our goal, keep our eyes fixed on you. Encourage us to persevere in running the race that you have set before us, and strengthen us to overcome all obstacles.

  29. PRAYER OF THE DAY For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  30. FIRST READING R: The first reading for the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter five of Isaiah beginning at verse one. Isaiah 5:1-7 CEV The song of the vineyard

  31. Isaiah 5:1-7 The LORD said: I will sing a song about my friend's vineyard that was on the side of a fertile hill.

  32. Isaiah 5:1-7 2My friend dug the ground, removed the stones, and planted the best vines. He built a watchtower and dug a pit in rocky ground for pressing the grapes. He hoped they would be sweet, but bitter grapes were all it produced.

  33. Isaiah 5:1-7 3Listen, people of Jerusalem and of Judah! You be the judge of me and my vineyard. 4What more could I have done for my vineyard? I hoped for sweet grapes, but bitter grapes were all that grew. 5Now I will let you know what I am going to do. I will cut down the hedge and tear down the wall.

  34. Isaiah 5:1-7 My vineyard will be trampled and left in ruins. 6It will turn into a desert, neither pruned nor hoed; it will be covered with thorns and briars. I will command the clouds not to send rain. 7I am the LORD All-Powerful! Israel is the vineyard, and Judah is the garden I tended with care.

  35. Isaiah 5:1-7 I had hoped for honesty and for justice, but dishonesty and cries for mercy were all I found. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  36. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 80 1Shepherd of Israel, you lead the descendants of Joseph, and you sit on your throne above the winged creatures. Listen to our prayer and let your light shine C: 2for the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Save us by your power.

  37. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 8We were like a grapevine you brought out of Egypt. You chased other nations away and planted us here. C: 9Then you cleared the ground, and we put our roots deep, spreading over the land.

  38. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 10Shade from this vine covered the mountains. Its branches climbed the mighty cedars 11and stretched to the sea; its new growth reached to the river. C: 12Our LORD, why have you torn down the wall from around the vineyard? You let everyone who walks by pick the grapes.

  39. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 13Now the vine is gobbled down by pigs from the forest and other wild animals. C: 14God All-Powerful, please do something! Look down from heaven and see what's happening to this vine.

  40. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 15With your own hands you planted its roots, and you raised it as your very own. C: 16Enemies chopped the vine down and set it on fire. Now show your anger and destroy them.

  41. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 17But help the one who sits at your right side, the one you raised to be your own. C: 18Then we will never turn away. Put new life into us, and we will worship you.

  42. Psalm 80:1,2,8-19CEV R: 19LORD God All-Powerful, make us strong again! Smile on us and save us. C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

  43. SECOND READING R: The second reading is written in Chapters eleven and twelve of Hebrews beginning at verse twenty nine. Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 CEV The great cloud of witnesses

  44. Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 29Because of their faith, the people walked through the Red Sea on dry land. But when the Egyptians tried to do it, they were drowned 30God's people had faith, and when they had walked around the city of Jericho for seven days, its walls fell down.

  45. Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 31Rahab had been a prostitute, but she had faith and welcomed the spies. So she wasn't killed with the people who disobeyed.

  46. Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 32What else can I say? There isn't enough time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets 33Their faith helped them conquer kingdoms, and because they did right, God made promises to them.

  47. Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 They closed the jaws of lions 34and put out raging fires and escaped from the swords of their enemies. Although they were weak, they were given the strength and power to chase foreign armies away. 35Some women received their loved ones back from death.
