Opening sentence M: God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, C: who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, M: whom no one has seen or can see: C: to him be honour and might forever. Amen. (1 Tim 6:15,16 NIV alt)

We sing our opening hymn: Fight the good fight LH 352 CAL293 John Samuel BewleyMonsell 1811-75, alt.
Fight the good fight 1. Fight the good fight with all your might, Christ is your strength, and Christ your right; take hold of life, and it will be your joy and crown eternally.
Fight the good fight 2. Run the straight race through God's good grace, lift up your eyes, and seek his face: life with its way before you lies, Christ is the path and Christ the prize.
Fight the good fight 3. Cast care aside, lean on your guide, his boundless mercy will provide; trust, and your trusting soul will prove Christ is its life, and Christ its love.
Fight the good fight 4. Faint not, nor fear, his arms are near; he does not change, and you are dear; only believe and Christ will be your all-in-all eternally.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.
Confession and absolution C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. »
Confession and absolution We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. »
Confession and absolution Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Therefore, upon your confession, as a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. C: Amen.
greeting M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray that we help other people. C: God, the giver of all good gifts, teach us to be understanding and compassionate to all people, whatever their needs, and to share with them the good things you have provided. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST READING R: The first reading for the nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost is written in chapter thirty two of Jeremiah beginning at verse one Jeremiah32:1-3a,6-15 CEV Jeremiah buys some land
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 The LORD spoke to me in the tenth year that Zedekiah was king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year that Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylonia. 2At that time, the Babylonian army had surrounded Jerusalem, and I was in the prison at the courtyard of the palace guards. 3Zedekiah had ordered me to be held there:
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 6Later, when I was in prison, the LORD said: 7Jeremiah, your cousin Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, will visit you. He must sell his field near the town of Anathoth, and because you are his nearest relative, you have the right and the responsibility to buy it and keep it in the family.
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 8Hanamel came, just as the LORD had promised. And he said, "Please buy my field near Anathoth in the territory of the Benjamin tribe. You have the right to buy it, and if you do, it will stay in our family.”
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 The LORD had told me to buy it 9from Hanamel, and so I did. The price was seventeen pieces of silver, and I weighed out the full amount on a scale.
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 10-11I had two copies of the bill of sale written out, each containing all the details of our agreement. Some witnesses and I signed the official copy, which was folded and tied, before being sealed shut with hot wax. Then I gave Hanamel the silver.
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 12And while he, the witnesses, and all the other Jews sitting in the courtyard were still watching, I gave both copies to Baruch son of Neriah. 13-14I told Baruch that the LORD had said: Take both copies of this bill of sale, one sealed shut and the other open, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.
Jeremiah 32:1-3a,6-15 15I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and I promise you that people will once again buy and sell houses, farms, and vineyards in this country. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 91:1-6,14-16 CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 91 1Live under the protection of God Most High and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful. C: 2Then you will say to the LORD, "You are my fortress, my place of safety; you are my God, and I trust you.”
Psalm 91:1-6,14-16 CEV R: 3The LORD will keep you safe from secret traps and deadly diseases. C: 4He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure. His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall.
Psalm 91:1-6,14-16 CEV R: 5You won't need to worry about dangers at night or arrows during the day. C: 6And you won't fear diseases that strike in the dark or sudden disaster at noon.
Psalm 91:1-6,14-16 CEV R: 14The LORD says, "If you love me and truly know who I am, I will rescue you and keep you safe. C: 15When you are in trouble, call out to me. I will answer and be there to protect and honour you.
Psalm 91:1-6,14-16 CEV R: 16You will live a long life and see my saving power.” C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.
Second reading R: The second reading is written in chapter six of First Timothy beginning at verse six. 1 Timothy 6:6-19 CEV Pastoral advice to Timothy
1 Timothy 6:6-19 6Religion does make your life rich, by making you content with what you have. 7We didn't bring anything into this world, and we won't take anything with us when we leave. 8So we should be satisfied just to have food and clothes.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 9People who want to be rich fall into all sorts of temptations and traps. They are caught by foolish and harmful desires that drag them down and destroy them. 10The love of money causes all kinds of trouble. Some people want money so much that they have given up their faith and caused themselves a lot of pain.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 11Timothy, you belong to God, so keep away from all these evil things. Try your best to please God and to be like him. Be faithful, loving, dependable, and gentle. 12Fight a good fight for the faith and claim eternal life. God offered it to you when you clearly told about your faith, while so many people listened.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 13Now I ask you to make a promise. Make it in the presence of God, who gives life to all, and in the presence of Jesus Christ, who openly told Pontius Pilate about his faith. 14Promise to obey completely and fully all that you have been told until our Lord Jesus Christ returns.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 15The glorious God is the only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords. At the time that God has already decided, he will send Jesus Christ back again. 16Only God lives forever! And he lives in light that no one can come near. No human has ever seen God or ever can see him. God will be honoured, and his power will last forever. Amen.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 17Warn the rich people of this world not to be proud or to trust in wealth that is easily lost. Tell them to have faith in God, who is rich and blesses us with everything we need to enjoy life.
1 Timothy 6:6-19 18Instruct them to do as many good deeds as they can and to help everyone. Remind the rich to be generous and share what they have. 19This will lay a solid foundation for the future, so that they will know what true life is like. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
C: Alleluia, alleluia. “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. ” Alleluia. (Luke 16:31 NRSV)
gospel M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter sixteen of the Gospel according to St Luke beginning at verse nineteen. C: Glory to you O Lord. Luke 16:19-31 CEV Parable of the rich man and Lazarus
Luke 16:19-31 19There was once a rich man who wore expensive clothes and every day ate the best food. 20But a poor beggar named Lazarus was brought to the gate of the rich man's house. 21He was happy just to eat the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. His body was covered with sores, and dogs kept coming up to lick them.
Luke 16:19-31 22The poor man died, and angels took him to the place of honour next to Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23He went to hell and was suffering terribly.
Luke 16:19-31 When he looked up and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side, 24he said to Abraham, "Have pity on me! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and touch my tongue. I'm suffering terribly in this fire.”
Luke 16:19-31 25Abraham answered, "My friend, remember that while you lived, you had everything good, and Lazarus had everything bad. Now he is happy, and you are in pain. 26And besides, there is a deep ditch between us, and no one from either side can cross over.”
Luke 16:19-31 27But the rich man said, "Abraham, then please send Lazarus to my father's home. 28Let him warn my five brothers, so they won't come to this horrible place." 29Abraham answered, "Your brothers can read what Moses and the prophet wrote. They should pay attention to that.”
Luke 16:19-31 30Then the rich man said, "No, that's not enough! If only someone from the dead would go to them, they would listen and turn to God." 31So Abraham said, "If they won't pay attention to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even to someone who comes back from the dead." This is the gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ.
Prayer after gospel M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your great generosity to us. Lead us to reflect your love by sharing our wealth with those in need. C: Amen.
