Gettinger Foundation Tutoring Program Include the following information in your email: PAID tutoring positions at the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club • Days of the week you are available to tutor from 4:00-6:00PM (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday) Must tutor two days a week! • Graduation year • Major or Intended Major • If you have transportation or will require transportation Emailardome@syr.eduby September 6thif interested • No work study necessary • Transportation available • Monday-Thursday 4-6pm

  5. Better Grades Through Extra Credit • Total Points from Modules: 650 • Extra Credit Options • 15 from speakers and giving blood (outside class) • On average, 20+ from competition (in-class) • Example: Lost 120 points total on modules = 530 = B- But gain 45 extra credit points = 575 = B+

  6. Extra CreditOpportunities! Receive extra credit throughout the semester by attending any speech related to PublicPolicy. You may receive up to 3 points per event that you attend: 5 total events x 3 points per event = 15 possible points *These 15 points can make the difference between an A- or aB+

After the event, fill out the Extra Credit Speaker Evaluation Form located under the Extra Credit tab on the PAFwebsite: https://paf101.expressions.syr.edu/extra-credit/ After you complete the online form within48 hours,Mollywill send you an email letting youknowthat shereceived it and the total amount of points you havereceived.   12. Saving Your Work! • Email your module to yourself after making any changes • Save it to Microsoft • Use a flash drive Remember that no special considerations will be given even if your computer/technology fails!!!

Class Rules • No CELL PHONES or TEXTING • During Lectures, use of laptops for 101 purposes ONLY • MUST SIT IN FRONT OF YOUR TA • Don’t take notes on my lectures during class, just take notes when we talk about modules • If you are late (after 12:45) you lose 5 points from your module STARTING NEXT CLASS

Absent Policy • If you are absent from class, you are still responsible for any homework due • Check the last slide from the lecture you missed for upcoming assignments • If you’re not here on the day a paper is due, hand it in before it is due in Maxwell 102 if you don’t want it to be late. • Email your TA if you’re going to be absent

  15. Article Requirements • MUST use a newspaper that has a print version • No magazines • Do not use campus publications (NO Daily Orange!) • Must be written after January 1, 2019

  16. Tips to Find Articles • Most newspaper websites have a paywall after a certain number of articles, but using incognito mode can avoid it • Go “incognito” on your laptop when searching for articles so you don’t get charged/ have to pay! • If you don’t know how, GOOGLE IT!

  18. Meet your TA’s • Listen for Helpful Hints • You can visit any TA’s office hours, but you can only email your TA regarding your module paper. • You cannot email your TA less than 24 hours before a module is due.

  19. YOU MUST… • E-mail your TA by 8 pm on 9/4 or lose 5 points!!!!

  20. Office hour Requirement for Module 1 • See any TA during office hours • Get a receipt from a TA • Staple behind grade sheet of Module One or lose 5 points • Office hours are in MAX 113. Hours are on the PAF 101 website and on the door

  21. Consulting through Email • You are not allowed to email questions to your TA about the Modules within 24 hours of the paper’s due date.

Intro to Module 1 Paper • Module 1 is due at 12:45 on 9/13. • If your Module is late… -Lose 5 points off your module grade if it is handed in by 4:30 on 9/13 (Module due date) -Lose 20 points off your Module grade if handed in by the beginning of the next class. • PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BEYOND THE END OF THE CLASS AFTER MODULE 1 IS DUE -Example; if a module is due Monday and you do not turn it in, you have until Wednesday to turn it in. After that you will receive a 0.

Cover Sheet and Scoring • Each Module has a similar cover sheet • Module 1 = 125 points • 75 points for exercises 1-5 • 50 for Team Policy Exercise (TPE) explained in next class • Lose points off the top for • Late Paper (5 first day, 10 everyday after) • Writing (up to 10 points) • Organization (up to 5 points) • Participation (5 points per absence, lateness, immaturity)

  28. Module One Exercises 1.1-1.5 • 1.1-1.4 require research, thinking and writing • Answer the question with as little ink as possible • Pay attention to detail • Do the reference page while you do the module! • 1.5 is APA references. It’s a killer.

  29. APA HOMEWORK EXERCISE • Due to your TA at the beginning of class on Friday 9/6 or lose 5 points • Look at Module One downloads on PAF 101 website for APA Homework. • Print out answers to the assignment • Use APA Citation Guide from PAF 101 website

  31. Article Attachment Guidelines • Must be printed directly from webpage • NO LOOSE ARTICLES – must be attached directly after the exercise • Hand write exercise number (and letter, if applicable) on article printout • Articles must be dated after January 1, 2019

  32. Don’tPlagiarize! • Any direct quote must be in quotation marks with an internal citation • Failure to do so results in a zero for your paper

For Next Class • Start Module One paper and read chapter one in the Public Policy Skills in Action • Send an e-mail to your TA by 8 PM 9/4 or lose 5 points • Review the TPE Exercise Instructions in Module 1 downloads and bring printed copy to class. • APA Homework due Fri9/6 at the beginning of class (on website) or lose 5 points • Print a copy of Module 1 Newsletter and highlight three important hints by next class, or lose 5 points!
