Wind Power has become the least expensive and fastest growing source of electricity in the world • Global wind power market increased by 43% in 2005 • Currently at 59,322 MW • Powering nearly 18 million homes • 10% world’s electricity by 2020 if current trends continues Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) –www.gwec.net
Ashe County Project • Richard Calhoun has applied for a permit to install a 50 MW wind farm in Ashe County • Enough electricity to serve 12,500 to 15,000 homes. • This would be the first utility-scale project in the state
Watauga County Wind Ordinance • 1st in the state! • Small wind (up to 20kW): apply for a permit • Large (over 20 kW): present application to Planning Board • Includes clarification of the Ridge Law exemption for Windmills • Details at www.wind.appstate.edu
