  3. 1836 • On this day in 1836, Sam Houston is elected as president of the Republic of Texas, which earned its independence from Mexico in a successful military rebellion.

  4. 1836 • In October 1836, Columbia (today's West Columbia) became the first capital of an elected government of the Republic of Texas. President Houston, on Dec. 15, 1836, ordered the seat of government removed to Houston. The government began operating from Houston on April 19, 1837.

  5. 1838 • Lamar became a political opponent of President Sam Houston. In 1838, Houston could not by law run for another term. Lamar ran for the office himself and won. On December 10, 1838, Mirabeau B. Lamar was sworn in as president of the Republic of Texas

  6. 1839 • January 19,1839 • On this day in 1839, Waterloo (soon to be renamed Austin) was approved as the new capital of the Republic of Texas.

  7. 1840 Rutersville college, once located in rutersville,seven miles northeast of La Grange in central Fayette county , was the first chartered protestant college in Texas . The institution, which flourished between 1840 and 1856, was the dream of martin ruter , a Methodist missionary from Pennsylvania and superintendent of the Methodist mission in Texas in the early days of the republic.

  8. 1841 • After leaving office because the constitution of the republic of Texas barred a president from succeeding himself, Houston served in the Texas house of representatives as a congressman from san Augustine from 1839 to 1841.

  9. 1842 From the printing press to the internet and beyond , the mission of Texas oldest newspaper has changed little since that first edition in 1842:tell the stories of Galveston county – one day at a time.

  10. 1845 In 1845, the United States of Americaannexed the Republic of Texas and admitted it to the Union as the 28th state. The U.S. thus inherited Texas's border dispute with Mexico; this quickly led to the Mexican-American War, during which the U.S. captured additional territory (known as the Mexican Cession of 1848), extending the nation's borders all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Texas claimed the eastern part of this new territory, comprising parts of present-day Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Wyoming and Oklahoma. The resulting dispute among Texas, the federal government, and New Mexico Territory was resolved in the Compromise of 1850, when much of these lands became parts of other territories of the United States in exchange for the U.S. federal government assuming the Texas Republic's $10 million in debt.

  11. 1847 • By German emigration company had helped about 7,000 Germans immigrate to Texas. Citizens in Boerne , comfort, sisterdale and similar towns organized clubs to study German writings and musical groups to play their favorite German tunes.

  12. 1867 • The Houston “stonewalls” beat the Galveston “Robert E. Lee” in the first recorded baseball game in Texas.
