The Power of Attitude • Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox, CC (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist. He became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg. He is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes of the 20th century and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run, the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.
Operating out of Astoria, Oregon, no-nonsense, all-business Jay Browning started his company from the ground up. Logging is one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet, and Jay knows it. He lost his hand in a logging accident and now wears a prosthetic, but prides himself on not accepting any of the workers' compensation checks that followed the ordeal. Taking handouts just isn't Jay's style.
Oh, my friend, it's not what they take away from you that counts. It's what you do with what you have left. ~Hubert Humphrey
"The future belongs to the common man with uncommon determination. –Baba Amte • "Today is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way." • – Dr. Seuss
Attitudes Defined • Attitudes are the established ways of responding to people and situations that we have learned, based on the beliefs, values and assumptions we hold. Attitudes become manifest through your behavior.
Attitude Drives Behavior • Attitudes drive behavior. Your body language is a result of your mental attitude. By choosing your attitude you get in that mood and send out a message that everyone understands, consciously or unconsciously.
Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same. ~Francesca Reigler
"Almost always, you have a choice as to what attitude to adopt. There is nothing in any normal work situation that dictates you must react one way or another. If you feel angry about something that happens, for instance, that's how you choose to feel. Nothing in the event itself makes it absolutely necessary for you to feel that way. It is your choice. And since you do have a choice, most of the time you'll be better off if you choose to react in a positive rather than a negative way."3
To be upset over what you don't have is to waste what you do have. ~Ken S. Keyes, Jr., Handbook to Higher Consciousness
The Power of Positive Attitude • It is not what happens to you that counts. It is how you react to what happens to you, especially when you have unexpected problems of any kind. Learn and master powerful strategies you can use to keep yourself thinking and acting positively and creatively.
Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be different. ~Katherine Mansfield Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be different. ~Katherine Mansfield
Positive AttitudeMeans Longer Life • If you want to live a longer, healthier life then you need to develop and maintain a positive attitude – it's now a fact thanks to a study from the two American Universities.5 Researchers followed and studied 1500 people for 7-years. All 1500 were in good health when the study started. Researchers followed how they aged by measuring such things as weight loss, walking speed, exhaustion and the strength of their grip. • What exactly did they discover? They found that people who maintained a positive attitude were significantly less likely to show signs of aging, they were less likely to become frail and were more likely to be stronger and healthier than those that had a negative attitude. If you have a doom and gloom attitude you're actually killing yourself and at the very least – you're negative attitude is just making you weaker.
A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes. ~Hugh Downs
Researchers found that a positive thinking and attitude improved a persons health because it made it more likely that they would succeed in life. So not only will a positive attitude help you be healthy and live longer – but it also increases the likelihood that you will succeed. • Lead researcher Dr. Glenn Ostir explained it this way: "I believe that there is a connection between mind and body – and that our thoughts and attitudes/emotions affect physical functioning, and over all health, whether through direct mechanisms, such as immune function, or indirect mechanisms, such as social support networks."
We can destroy ourselves by cynicism and disillusion, just as effectively as by bombs. ~Kenneth Clark
Attitude Motivation • Your attitude is the first thing people pick up on in face-to-face communication. Just as laughing, yawning, and crying are infectious, attitude is infectious. Before you say a word, your attitudes can infect the people who see you with the same behavior. Somehow just by looking or feeling, you can be infected by another person's attitude, and vice versa. When you are operating from inside a really useful attitude, such as enthusiasm, curiosity, and humility, your body language tends to take care of itself and sends out unmistakable signals of openness.
We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. ~Joseph Campbell
The Power of Gratitude • "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." – Melody Beattie
Effective Problem Solving • When you think of problems you'll only attract more problems. When you think of solutions – you'll attract solutions and opportunities. • Approach the problem with the expectant attitude that there is an innovative practical solution just waiting to be found. Be relaxed, confident and clear in your mind.
The Key to Overcoming Tragedy • However difficult it may be, I have found that the key to overcoming tragedy (or any other problem) is by not resisting it because as Carl Jung once said, “What you resist persists.” • The Law of Attraction teaches that whatever we focus on expands, whether or not it is desired and wanted. Therefore, the opportunity is always to focus on what we do want in any situation, even in the tragic ones.
“If you immediately take your thought from what is bringing forth a negative feeling, or from focusing upon the problem, and you give your full attention to the solution, then you do not feel negative. It is only when you focus on the problem, that you feel negative. When you focus on the solution, you feel better.” • - Abraham-Hicks
"Growth is demanding and may seem dangerous, for there is loss as well as gain in growth. But why go on living if one has ceased to grow." May Sarton
"When you get into a tight place and it seems you can't go on, hold on, for that's just the place and the time that the tide will turn." Harriet Beecher Stowe
"Healing is a matter of time, but it is at times also a matter of opportunity." Hippocrates
