Cape Neddick Lighthouse • Maine’s southernmost lighthouse. • Built on a rocky island just off shore. • Because of this, its nickname is “Nubble Light” • It is only accessible by boat although a previous lightkeeper used to transport his child to the mainland for school in a hanging basket! The coastguard thought it was too dangerous and told him to stop.

Early lighthouses used candles as a source of light. Lighthouse keepers and their families were kept busy keeping the candles lit, cleaning and polishing the lenses and tower windows. Lighthouses that are automated have electricity powered lamps. Automated Because of this, there is no need for lightkeepers to live in or next to lighthouses anymore.
