  1. Massachusetts Expanded Learning Time Initiative Leadership Team Session April 11, 2013

  2. Time to Succeed Coalition - MA Time to Succeed Coalition is building TSC Massachusetts, a state coalition, focused on broadening support for expanded time across the state and ensuring that Massachusetts remains the leader on this issue. TSC Massachusetts launched on April 2nd at an event at the State House. To date, the coalition has over 4,000 grassroots supporters and over 85 featured signatories in the Commonwealth. • Focus on the student populations that need it most • Be available to all qualifying schools, but only proceed where the school and the community put together a strong plan to do it well • Be funded sustainably and cost-effectively • Build on all that has already been learned about how to spend all learning time well • Be pursued in combination with other elements vital for student and school success (e.g. strong leadership, high-quality teaching, use of data) Key Platform Elements http://www.timetosucceed.com/massachusetts/

  3. Time to Succeed Coalition Event State House, April 2, 2013 “Nearly every school that is able to break the mold and get impressive achievement results with students from low-income backgrounds makes use of a longer school day, a longer school year, or both. And leaders of these so-called “high-performing, high-poverty” schools almost universally say their results would not be possible without the added time they utilize.” –Commonwealth Magazine “We know what works. We know that moving away from a school day and school year based on a farming schedule and making it more like the modern work day makes sense…We know that more time on task makes sense and works.” –Governor Deval Patrick "We feel and the governor feels strongly that this is going to allow us to increase opportunity and close achievement gaps” –Education Secretary Matt Malone

  23. Creating a SY2013-14 Professional Learning Plan A cohesive professional learning plan maps out professional learning activities in two ways: • A year-long calendar that includes dates for professional learning activities (as well as assessments, vacations, holidays) • Shorter term (4-6 week) detailed plans that include the agenda items/objectives for each activity in that time frame

  24. Sample Professional Learning Plan Take 10 minutes to individually review the sample year-long calendar and Summer-September Professional Learning Plan from Pierce Middle School.
