Possibilities for increasing the data capacity for digital television • Using DVB-T system • Modification of the current DVB-T system parameters • Additional layers by modifying the GE06 Digital Plan Not a practical solution Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Possibilities for increasing the data capacity for digital television • Using DVB-T system • Modification of the current DVB-T system parameters • Additional layers by modifying the GE06 Digital Plan • 1. Revision of the GE06 Digital Plan – New conference • 119 countries are affected • ST61 - RRC06 : 45 yearsbetween the two conferences. • 3-4 years necessary for the preparation Not a realistic solution • 2. Modification of the GE06 Plan based on Article 4 Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Modification of the GE06 Plan based on Article 4 • Planning exercise 1 for Hungary • System: DVB-T • Channel: 46 • Modulation: 64QAM • Code Rate: 3/4 • GI/TU: ¼ • Reception mode: PO Interfering field strength Coverage area for portable outdoor • The GE06 Plan uses the 470-862 MHz band with high spectrum efficiency • No chance for replacing many „lost channels above 60” with new ones • Possiblesolution: extension of GE06 allotments for the neighbouring ones Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Extension of GE06 allotments – Planning Exercise 2 completing 6 DVB-T layers Steps: 1. Draft plan based on GE06 allotment plan 2. Negotiation, modifications, 3. Negotiation, modifications, x. Agreement on the draft plan with the neighbours 41 40 38 34 26 x+1.. Planning of the transmitters ’parameters x+2. Compatibility analysis with the GE06 Plan entries n-1. Negotiation, modifications, negotiation, ….. n. Agreement on the parameters The negotiations are ongoing Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Extension of GE06 allotments – Planning Exercise 2– planning of parameters • System: DVB-T • Channel: 26 • Modulation: 64QAM • Code Rate: 3/4 • GI/TU: ¼ • Reception mode: PO Coverage area for portable outdoor Interfering field strength Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Implementation of DVB-T2 system • Implementing DVB-T2 system • Without modifying the GE06 Digital Plan • Additional layers by modifying the GE06 Digital Plan (source: DVB Fact Sheet - September 2012: http://www.dvb.org/technology/fact_sheets/DVB-T2_Factsheet.pdf) Several GE06 countries have already decided on the introduction of DVB-T2 Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
Implementation of DVB-T2 system • Main features of DVB-T2 system from network planning point of view: • IFFT 16k and 32k • GI MAX: ¼ (16k) and 19/128 (32k) • Q delayed IQ modulation • Modified error correction methods (BCH and LDPC) • The size of DVB-T2 SFN areas are limited by the compatibility with the GE06 Plan entries of neighbouring countries Longer guard interval (448 μs and 532 μs, 134-160 km) Decrease in C/N • less self-interference • Bigger coverage • More robust network Regional Regulatory Seminar on Transition to Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting and Digital Dividend for Europe, Budapest, Hungary
