Weapons and Other US Military Advances By Timothy Hoyt
Muskets The most commonly used firearm during the Revolutionary War Revolutionary War muskets were commonly equipped with bayonets, which were useful against cavalry and in close combat. Muskets used in the Revolutionary War included the Brown Bess, the Charleville, and the Kentucky Long Rifle.
Brown Bess The British militaries main weapon. • Weight: 10.5 pounds • Length: 58.5 inches • Cartridge 0.71 inches musket ball, undersized to reduce the effects of powder fouling • Action Flintlock • Rate of fire User dependent; usually 3 to 4 rounds a minute • Muzzle velocity Variable • Effective range Variable (50-100 yards) • Feed system Muzzle-loaded
Charleville The French Musket, imported to America during the Revolution due to the influence of Marquis de Lafayette. • Weight 10 pounds • Length 60 inches • Caliber .69" musket ball • Action flintlock • Rate of fire 2-3 round/min • Effective range 100 to 200 yards max 50 to 75 effective • Feed system muzzle-loaded
Kentucky Long Rifle Kentucky long rifle – Officially named the Pennsylvania rifle, the Kentucky long rifle was the main weapon of the American Militia. • Weight Variable because it’s hand crafted • Length over 65 in • Caliber 0.60 in approximately .36 cal to .45 cal also were common • Action Flintlock, Percussion • Rate of fire User dependent, Usually 2+ rounds a minute • Effective range Variable, 100 yards (91 meters) typical, to well over 300 yards (273 meters) by an experienced user • Feed system Muzzle loaded
Cannons • The cannon was a highly effective weapon throughout the Revolutionary War and was key to the American victory. There were two types of cannon utilized during the American Revolutionary War: Mortars and Howitzers. All three types were considered smoothbore because the inside of the cannon's barrel was not rifled. Rifling was the cutting of spiral grooves along the length of the barrel's bore, which imparted a spin to the projectile
Mortars The mortar was mainly used for sieges. • Weight: 112 pounds • Length: 16.5 inches • Caliber: 5.4 inches • Range: 1000 yards
HOWITZERS Howitzers were used to shoot bombs at the enemy this was useful in order to kill more soldiers at the same time. • Weight: 104 pounds • Length: 30 inches • Caliber: 8 inches • Range: 750 to 800 feet
Flintlock Pistol Used primarily as a secondary weapon by soldiers, the pistol was considered very inaccurate and was more of a personal weapon. The pistol was popular in early American duels, which allowed participants to be tough guys without usually being killed
Submarines • America first experimented with the concept of an underwater vessel during the Revolutionary War. A submarine, then called "the Turtle" was invented by David Bushnell in order to attach explosives to British ships without being detected. Though General Washington loathed this underwater manner of attack as "ungentlemanly", the Turtle was deployed on September 6th, 1776. Piloted by Ezra Lee (and only Ezra Lee). All attempts at making it work failed.
Ships Ships of the American Revolution were mostly owned by the British, French, and Privateers. These ship classes were: • Sloop – The single deck sailing ships, they were also known as escort ships • Schooner – These Ships had at least 2 masts. They were mostly used for transporting supplies • Frigate – the second biggest ship type in any fleet. • Ship of the line – a two decked ship that was the main ship in any navy.
Guns • All guns of the civil war were rifled which meant that the weapons were more accurate and handguns played an important role in the civil war.
Submarines The Civil War saw the first submarine to successfully sink its target, the 40-foot-long Hunley , which was operated by eight men turning a hand crank attached to her propeller shaft. The Hunley sank and was recovered three times during trial runs before it was successful. On Feb. 16, 1864, under the cover of darkness, the Hunley sank the USS Housatonic off Charleston.
Ironclads The Civil War also had two of the first ever iron coated ships. These ships were known at the time as ironclads. Cannon balls couldn’t get through their defenses and later on these two Iron sea forts fought each other and no one won, but both sides clamed victory anyway.
Weapons Weapons changed between time of the civil war and WWI and WWII. We now have the M1918 Browning automatic rifle and the M1917 Browning Machine gun.
