  1. Training in the Workplace My name is Andrew Wheeler Training in the Workplace BTEC National Level 3

  2. I want to understand

  3. Giving and Receiving Instructions

  4. A Quick Game You only have 5 minutes to complete the task. In pairs – sit back to back If you have the picture given to you: • have a good look at the picture; • Now describe it as best you can to help your partner draw the picture as you see it. If you have a blank piece of paper given to you: • Draw what your partner tells you as best you can within the timescale.

  5. Did you enjoy the exercise? • Did you want to understand? • Are you keen to improve for the future? • Would you like more constructive feedback?

  6. A Two Way Process • If… • Its not clear what you have to do • You’re not given enough time • The instructions are wrong .... then it won’t be a good outcome

  7. Two Way Process • If… • We don’t listen • We don’t respond • We don’t try to record accurately • We don’t try to meet the deadline … then it is unlikely to be a good outcome

  8. Could you do better next time? Giving Instructions: • Talking more clearly • Taking more/less time • Checking that your partner has understood. Receiving Instructions: • Listening more clearly • Taking more/less time • Checking that you have understood correctly

  9. In the World of Work • We are often thrown in at the deep end; • We have to respond to requests; • Or give instructions (e.g. to customers); • We have to try to be helpful; • Perhaps with urgency. • Accuracy may be critical • Communication may be vital • Our listening skills will be essential.

  10. What happens when we are given feedback? Do we understand? Do we want to understand? Do we want to improve? Do we know what to do to improve? Ask… How can I improve next time…?

  11. Training in the Workplace…What’s it all about? What is training? In the workplace? Why would we train? Training in the Workplace BTEC National Level 3

  12. An introduction… Role play Prepare a set of questions which you think will elicit the best results and make sure you record (audio, video, pen & paper, or direct input) and write up your findings including both the questions and answers. Acting as a careers adviser, interview each other in pairs, to find out what type of work you’d like to do. Discover each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and explore opportunities for careers.

  13. Assignment Pack Its on the Hub ! Training in the Workplace BTEC National Level 3

  14. What is training? Is it different to learning? Not really but it is often linked to specific vocations rather than simply the acquisition of knowledge for its own sake. What do we mean by “workplace” – place of work in all sorts of different contexts and environments. Have you understood what we will be studying?
