  1. Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte • After Robespierre is guillotined, a vote is called, a new government is created, called the Directory. • They chose a young able man to command France’s armies, Napoleon.

  2. Napoleon Becomes a Hero • While the delegates were creating the Directory, royal supporters came to kill them, Napoleon was called to defend the delegates. Napoleon became a instant hero. • Napoleon then led the French army to many victories, further cementing his reputation with the people.

  3. Napoleon Becomes Dictator • The new government, the Directory, had quickly lost favor with the people. Some influential citizens told Napoleon to take control of France. Napoleon and his wife Josephine, quickly put their plan into action. • Napoleon used the army to drive out the Directory and quickly became the dictator of France.

  4. Napoleon Fixes France • 4 advances in French society by Napoleon. • -Fixed the economy: equal taxation and state banks. All peeps pay the same =

  5. Napoleon and Education • Created the Lycees, government-run public schools. All children could attend, jobs not based on wealth or family, but ability. • Rise of the Middle Class Lycees

  6. Napoleon and the Church • Brought back the Church. Agreed with the Pope, church would have influence and importance in society, but not a say in political affairs. Church happy, people happy.

  7. Napoleonic Code • A system of laws, called the Napoleonic Code. A uniform set of laws for every citizen. • Equality? Everyone is treated the same

  8. Emperor Napoleon • Next Napoleon crowned himself the Emperor of France. Napoleon placed the crown on his own head, not the church.
