DISTRICT DEMOGRAPHICS • 18 schools: • 11 elementary schools • 3 with magnet focus • 1 Kindergarten school • 3 middle schools • 1 with magnet focus • 2 traditional high schools • 2 professional-technical high schools • 1 in KTEC consortium with Post Falls and Lakeland • 1 district school also offering credit retrieval Students go to classes at Lake City H.S. OUR CALENDAR • Published annually • Collaboration time every instructional Monday morning. • Elementary 7:45 – 9:45AM • Middle/High 7:00 – 8:40AM • Most led by building administration • One per month reserved for district-led cross-district collaboration. • 5 “Common Topic” windows given to building administrators along with suggested activities. • Instructional hours extended to compensate for required time.   8. NEW IDEAS Coeur d’Alene High School’s TeraViksplaced 14th at the First Robotics World Championships in Atlanta, GA. This year's competition, dubbed Ultimate Ascent, challenged teams of high school students to spend six weeks building a robot able to compete against other robots in an arena game. The robots have to be able to point and shoot Frisbees, block other robots' Frisbees, and then climb a 90-foot high pyramid. Coeur d’Alene School District 27 1 | www.cdaschools.org

TIME Sophia Demata, a first-grader at Skyway Elementary, left, enjoys visiting with class mates and Gabby Alonso, philanthropy chair for the University of Idaho's Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, during a Thursday visit to promote reading among elementary students. The sorority was participating in the Learning with Lucky reading program supplying more than 100 first grade students at the school with rewards for toy puppies that were distributed by Parker Toyota and Horace Mann Insurance. OUR DISTRICT’S WORK • Organized work by semester: • First semester – Idaho Core Curriculum • Realignment and revision • Done by small teams and refined during cross-district time. • Second semester – Smarter Balanced • Capacity building / Stiggins training • Revision of all interim assessments to mirror SBAC. • Instructional coaches led professional development in building and cross-district. • Additional opportunities provided during summer and after classes. • With credit available Coeur d’Alene School District 27 1 | www.cdaschools.org

OUR IDAHO CORE CURRICULAR WORK • Recruited core curriculum writers at each grade level and subject area in English Language Arts / Math. • Gave instruction on best practices and district standards. • Developed initial curriculum guides, maps and units. • Shared with colleagues during cross-district dates. • Adjustments made afterward Kevin Shaker, a fifth-grader at Atlas Elementary in Coeur d’Alene, looks at rock samples during a recent experiment. OUR NEW ASSESSMENTS • Representative district subcommittee, “The Top 40” convened • Trainings from Stiggins group through State Department • Built capacity around SBAC • Development of all new EOCAs and Benchmark assessments • With same types of questioning strategies as summative test. • Will be monitored beginning in fall. THIS YEAR’S WORK • Parent communication • English Language Arts/Mathematics will be meeting to review progress. • Fidelity to curriculum • Holes in learning • Materials needed • All other content areas will begin curricular work around Literacy standards of the Idaho Core. • Assisted by instructional coaches Katie Pemberton, a mathematics teacher at Canfield Middle School and Idaho’s Teacher of the Year in 2013, works with students through a simulation exercise involving algebra .
