Teacher Notes PREPARATION: • Remember to check out a set of GPS units from the Technology Department prior to this lesson. • Print copies of the story on slide 3 for each student/pair/group. • Print one copy of each cache slide, cut the word cards, and place all word cards in their appropriate cache. • Hide the caches around your campus. Record the coordinates for the location of each cache on the Cache Guide Sheet (Slide 13). • Make copies of the Cache Guide Sheet for each student/pair/group. LESSON: • Students read the story. Discuss with partner or team which verbs could be improved by replacing with a more vivid verb. • Students use Cache Guide Sheet and GPS unit to locate caches, take a word card from each card that appropriately replaces a word in the story with a more vivid verb. They can then paste (or write) the word in place of the less vivid verb in the story. Remember that students can visit caches in any order, so each group/pair can be at a different cache at a time. • There are not necessarily any “correct answers” in this activity. Students must evaluate the passage to determine verbs that they feel are not vivid, then replace them with words that they feel best represent the story in a vivid way. Final versions of the story may vary.

One day the horse broke loose and ran away, and the villagers cried, “What bad luck!” “Maybe it’s good. Maybe it’s bad,” stated Pavel. “Who knows?” The next day, Pavel’s horse came into his yard with four wild horses chasing it, and the villagers said, “What good luck! The horses will help you get money.” “Maybe it’s good. Maybe it’s bad,” said Pavel. “Who knows?” The next day, one wild horse hit Pavel and broked his leg, and the villagers cried, “What bad luck! Now your mother must nurse you.” The next day, soldiers came into the village and took every healthy man to report to the king, but they did not take Pavel. Was it good luck or bad luck?
