Initial Areas of Satyagraha • Champaran – Bihar • Kaira – Gujrat • Ahmadabad - Gujrat
Champaran • He was appealing due to his simplicity and undoubted humour. • He made ordinary people feel that he appreciated and cared about their particular problems. • He dressed in the sort of clothes villagers wore and spoke the vernacular.
Champaran • Successful because he was not aligned with any particular political group. • He also refused to link the struggle with conventional politics. • Gandhi was able to turn the province into a power base for himself.
Non Cooperation Movement • Involved resignations from govt services. • Refusal to use the institutions of government and schools. • At a later stage to pay taxes and serve in the armed forces. • The burning of foreign cloth.
Results • Support from businessmen and Muslims. • Many of Gandhi’s adherents were new to institutional politics. • Mass movement of non cooperation was uncontrollable. • Failure to seduce enough of the Raj’s important collaborators.
