WHAT IS A TMA? • Formal organization of businesses and local governments dedicated to solving local transportation concerns • Usually focus on the travel needs of large employers and are often created to: • Give businesses a voice in local government transportation planning • Advocate enhanced mobility • To reduce employer costs of implementing individual worksite transportation programs through economies of scale
HOW DO TMAs FUNCTION? • TMAs provide information on current issues and initiatives for member employers • Serve as transportation “consultants” for businesses wishing to implement TDM programs such as carpooling, vanpooling, shuttles and parking management • Work with local governments, transit agencies, and other transportation providers to promote improved transportation services
POSSIBLE GOALS, SCOPE & OBJECTIVES FOR IRVING TMA • Objectives – Short term (2009 - 2010) • Survey area employers – use/need for TDM strategies • Identify/create Board and Governing Guidelines • Launch and manage NuRide (or equivalent service) • Promote TDM to area employers • Provide information on recent/ongoing transit construction, delays, alternate routes, etc.
POSSIBLE OBJECTIVES FOR IRVING TMA • Objectives – Long term • Services provided by other TMAs to be considered: • Promote and encourage employer involvement in “Best Workplaces for Commuters” recognition • Apply for and gain “Best Workplaces for Commuters Districts” recognition (new program) • Vanpooling programs • Shuttle service (to/from bus/rail and employment centers) • Guaranteed ride home • Education • Cross utilization of public vehicles (city/school/shuttles/vans) • Transit Station and/or Park and Ride • Child care facilities • Satellite work centers
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS • Implement Transportation Management Association (TMA) • Explore Implementing NuRide (or equivalent) Ridesharing System (based on employer demand) • Work in Partnership with NCTCOG and City of Irving
