Organs: • Skin • Lungs • Liver • Kidneys
OVERALL FUNCTION: • The Excretory system works to remove excess METABOLIC WASTES from the body. • **Metabolic wastes = carbon dioxide, water, heat, nitrogen compounds (urea, ammonia etc)
SKIN • Excretes: • Excess water • Salt • Heat
LUNGS • Excretes: • Carbon Dioxide • Water Vapor These two wastes, are formed as by-products of Cellular Respiration.
LIVER • Formation of UREA, a compound formed from the break down of proteins. • Urea is then transported to the kidneys for final excretion and elimination. • Breaks down old RBCs.
KIDNEY • Major Organs of the Excretory System!! • 2 main processes occur here: Filtration & Reabsorption. • Complex filtration allows for excretion and removal of : • Excess water • Urea • Other metabolic wastes found in the blood. This filtration forms a product called URINE.
Specialized structures of Kidneys: • Nephons: These are small “tubes” in which blood will pass through to be filtered. (This is where metabolic wastes are actually separated from the blood) • Loop of Henle: a part of each Nephronwhere reabsorption occurs. Necessary materials such as water, vitamins, salts amino acids and sugars are returned to the blood supply to be recirculated.
MORE….. • Ureters: Tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder. • Urethera: Tube that will carry urine from the bladder out of the body.
HOMEOSTASIS…… • The excretory system helps to maintain homeostasis by…….. Keeping levels of metabolic wastes at a safe even amount by removing them as they are formed.
