Introduction Bell Work • Who is the god of war? • Who is the goddess of war AND wisdom? Open your book and look at the table of contents. • Which chapters sound like they might be the most interesting? Why?
Chapter 1 – “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-algebra Teacher” • Listen as the chapter is read aloud. • Complete three annotations. • I liked/didn’t like…because… • I feel…because… • I predict… EXIT SLIP • What is the most important thing you learned about Percy in Chapter 1? Cite page # and sentence that supports your answer. Homework: Read and annotate Chapter 2
Chapter 2 – “Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death” • Complete Entrance Ticket -you may NOT use your book or each other! • QuickWrite/Draw (on back of entrance ticket) • What is one challenge Percy faces in this chapter? How does he respond? Write OR draw your response. You will have 7 minutes. Be prepared to share
Chapter 3 – “Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants” • Listen as the chapter is read aloud. • Purpose for reading: • What does Percy think about in this chapter? • What do we learn about him based on these thoughts? • Complete three annotations. Remember you are NOT writing the gist, you are writing thoughts, connections, emotions, etc. Homework: Read and annotate Chapter 4
Chapter 4 – “My Mother Teaches Me Bullfighting” • Bell Work • Video clip – What are the similarities and differences between the movie scene and the book? Give me ONE similarity and ONE difference.
Chapter 5 – “I Play Pinochle With a Horse” • Read the chapter out loud in groups, partners, or on your own to page 65 until 2:15 p.m. • Purpose for reading: Percy has just survived a traumatic night and is now in a completely unfamiliar and strange setting. This presents a unique challenge. How does Percy respond to this challenge? What inferences can you make based on his response?
