Perfect mixBy PRISCILLADon't you wish life was just like a book? This book brought so many emotions out of me. Hopeful-that out there in this crazy beautiful awful world people still can find love and hope to surpass the darkness.Sadness-that life out here is not always as bright and bubbly like In books. That not everyone gets their happy ending like the leads in this book.Wishful-I wish that every one had
someone that won't give up on them and would love them unconditionally. I wish I could hug everyone that felt lonely and that I could help them by holding their hand and guide them out of the foggy darkness.I am not always a bubbly person, I sometimes live in that darkness. I can say I'm addicted to sadness. But I play my part well and smile at the world with my least sincere smile. But I still like to think that this F@@@@@@ up world is worth living and that not everyone one is bad or is out to get me. I believe that there still amazing people out there in the world. I am still hopeful, wishful and maybe too afraid to think nothing less than that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic YA bookBy Jen SutAfter the tragic death of her sister, Ellery feels tired. She feels tired in her heart and soul. She has a plan, Already bought a gun. She has paid a company to clean up the next day. Luckily Ellery's plan does not go the way she wanted it to.This book blew me away. It is well written. The characters were so genuine and imperfectly beautiful. As a reader if you connect with a character, you are lucky. I connected with Ellery right from the start, but I also love Colter and Jackson. I liked Dean and Janie. This book made me laugh and cry. I know that sounds like a cliche, but I rarely cry while reading. This book is the first book I have emotionally connected to in a long time. I honestly could not recommend this book enough.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the fast- paced storyline and intriguing main character kept it from feeling like a downerBy MeganSometimes I have a hard time getting through books that deal with depression or suicide because I find myself feeling down while reading them. This book didnt sugarcoat or make light of the subject matter. In fact, it's probably the most realistic portrayal Ive read. But while the book was an emotional read, the fast-paced storyline and intriguing main character kept it from feeling like a downer. Its really well done and I highly recommend it! Ellery wants to die. Nothing is going right. Her younger sister is dead, and her family is in a shambles. But on the day that she tries to end it all, even the gun won't work. When she tries to return it, she's intercepted by a security guard who also happens to be a boy in one of her classes, Colter Sawyer. Colter recognizes Ellery's desperation and begins working hard to earn her trust. Why does this cute boy care about my worthless life?, Ellery wonders. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Colter has very good reasons for his vigilance, deep, personal reasons. And whether Ellery likes it or not, he won't let go. From School Library JournalGr 9 UpEllery finds life after the death of her little sister, Tate, unbearable. So she creates the perfect suicide plan, and all the pieces are in place: the gun, the cleaning service, and an empty house. All she has to do is pull the trigger. But after discovering that the gun is faulty, she rushes to Kmart to try to exchange it and is stopped by a security guard, Colter, who happens to go to her school. Thus begin Colter's efforts to save Ellery from herself. Her childhood friend Dean has also survived a suicide attempt, and Ellery starts to fixate on Dean; she recognizes in him a determination that mirrors her own. While Ellery is watching over Dean from afar, Colter falls in love with her as he tries to keep her alive. The backstory of how Ellery's sister died is told in flashbacks throughout the novel. Some of the plot connections may raise questions. No one seems to notice, for example, how desperate Ellery is to die, despite her suicide attempt and her subsequent erratic behavior. In addition, her father, who blames her for Tate's death, isn't fully integrated into the narrative. These missteps aside, Chapman has crafted a hauntingly beautiful story with richly developed characters. VERDICT A moving tale to recommend, especially to readers who loved Jennifer Niven's All the Bright Places.Nicole Detter-Smith, Homestead High School, IN "In this stunningly brave and necessary debut, Erica M. Chapman takes us on a journey to the edge and back--exploring grief, depression, and suicide with candor, insight, and above all, hope." - Amber Smith,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Way I Used to Be"A beautifully crafted, dark, and heartbreaking look at depression and suicide. Ellery's story is needed and necessary; Chapman is a writer to watch."- Kathleen Glasgow,New York Timesbestselling author ofGirl in Pieces"High school junior Ellery Stevens has decided to end her life. She cannot stop blaming herself for the freak driving accident in which her beloved younger sister was killed. Ellery's voice is engaging and authentic, and her edgy black humor comes into play.... Sadness gives way to redemption and an unforced hope in this thoughtful read." -- Kirkus s
