  3. Case study – Simon • Position – part-time job as a waiter • Positive eye-catching qualities that Simon displayed • i) positive attitude, enthusiastic nature • ii) communicated well • iii) proactive, took initiative

Preparation for the interview • The best qualified candidate may not be the one who gets the job – the best prepared might • Research the company/organisation beforehand • Make your transport arrangements ahead of time • Present yourself well – be well groomed and smartly dressed – take the ethos of the company into account • Have a pen and notebook in the interview

The interview • Networking rather than dropping off your cv • Interview skills • i) arrive on time • ii) make sure you know where to go • iii) dress appropriately • iv) good handshake v) follow the lead of the person/people interviewing you – gauge the environment • do some research into the company • prepare questions for your interviewer • Don’t ask about money in your first interview – wait until you have an offer or ask at your second interview

Body Language • Keep your body language open • Don’t fold your arms • First impressions count – smile, posture, handshake • Make eye contact • Walk with confidence • Don’t slouch in the chair but don’t sit on the edge of the chair either • Don’t fiddle with your hands or hair etc • Don’t do anything distractive • Voice projection is important, but not too loud or too soft • Don’t put on a fake accent

  7. What employers look for • Companies are interested in what you’ve done and what you can bring to the company – good communication skills very important here. • They want people who share their values. Have you gone the extra mile before? • Team player (usually). Sometimes they want a self driven go-getter to run with a project e.g sales. • Motivation • Technical skills eg. Computers, spelling
