  11. What’s all this about?? The French Revolution starts in 1789. The next slides will explain why. In 1793, the new leadership of France declares war on England. France is at war with many European Countries
  12. I. Problems In France A. Money Issues 1. France was bankrupt 2. only the peasants and the poor paid taxes 3. droughts and famine had devastated the countryside
  13. B. Political Issues 1. the nobles and the clergy controlled the government 2. the King could raise taxes whenever he wanted 3. ideas of democracy and liberty spread from America 4. most of the land was controlled by the rich
  14. II. Fighting Begins A. Early days of the War 1. storming of the Bastille (a prison in Paris) starts the war 2. at first there was not much violence 3. “Declaration of the Rights of Man” 4. more rights for French citizens
  15. B. Radical Days 1. both Louis and his wife were executed 2. during the Reign of Terror, 40,000 people were executed 3. as the death count rose, many people around the world became afraid
  16. What to do in 1793? Many Americans, led by Thomas Jefferson, were pro-France. They hoped the US would help* France. Others, led by Alexander Hamilton, were pro-British. They wanted US to help* Britain. Some wanted the US to stay out of this !! *Help= sell supplies, increase trade, etc.
