  1. Country Code DoD Transition to ISO 3166 - 1 By Bob Hammond June 22, 2011

  2. Background/Status • The National Institutes for Standards and Technology withdrew the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Publication 10-4, “Countries, Dependencies, Areas of Special Sovereignty, and their Principal Administrative Divisions” in September 2008. • The DoD IT Standards Committee allowed use of FIPS until December 31 2012. • The International Standards Organization has established a more current standard under International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3166-1 for Standards. • DoD has directed complete transition to ISO 3166-1 in full replacement of FIPS 10-1 by September 30 2012. • DoDAAD uses (ISO) 3166-1 digraph (two digit code) exclusive for addressing. To replace current “pseudo” ISO 3166-1 codes in DoDAAD, “locally assigned ISO codes" have been requested for entities that are in the FIPS 10-4 standard but not in ISO 3166-1. • A DLMS Change Proposal is planned. 2
