  1. Geographic Technologies Using technology to learn about places!

  2. GPS • Stands for Global Positioning System • Definition: The system that accurately determines the precise position of something on the earth

  3. What do we use GPS for? • Airplanes and ships • Finding the precise location of a vehicle or person through GPS on their phone or in their car • Monitoring location (Where’s the bus? Where is your package in the mail?)

  4. Remote Sensing • The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the Earth or from another long-distance method.

  5. Examples? • Satellites that track storms and other weather patterns

  6. GIS • Stands for Global Information System • Definition: A computer system that can capture, store, analyze and display geographic data

  7. USES • GIS is used to make pretty maps! • Maps made with GIS can be more complex than hand-drawn maps • Layers • Layers can be used to compare information and make connections between geographic ideas. • For example… where can we build roads that will be good for the population in the area?

  8. So what can I do with geography? • Aerial Photo Interpreter • GIS programmer Property manager • Air/water quality control manager • GIS Database Management • Public Utilities specialist • Cartographer • Hazardous waste planner • Real Estate Agent/Broker/Appraiser • Cartography Compiler • Earth Scientist (like Talley and Carwin!) • Surveyor location expert • Computer mapper • International Business Representative • Systems Analyst • Computer programmer • International Investment Analyst • Teacher • Demographer • Land developer • Traffic manager • Land Economist I got this list from Easter Michigan University Department of Geography and Geology

  9. Oh! There’s more! • Health Services planner • Remote Sensing Analyst • Climatologist • Hydrologist • Services organization manager • Coastal Zone Manager • Industrial developer • Site Researcher College/University Professor • Industrial planner • Soil conservationist • Community developer • Intelligence agent • Transportation analyst • Environmental Impact Analyst • Land-Use Analyst • Travel agent/specialist • Environmental Quality Specialist • Map curator/librarian • Urban Regional planner • Geographer • Park Ranger • Weather forecaster

  10. You thought we were done… Where can I find people who speak Lithuanian? How do I get to the pizza place? How many people in the world use cell phones? Where is the best place to take my zebra on vacation? Is there going to be a hurricane in Utah any time soon? What would I find if I tried to dig a hole to China? Where should the road go? How can I fit in when I visit India? How can we prepare for a rise in population? Is global warming something we should worry about? Why is it so cold in the winter? What is the happiest place on the earth? Is it really Disneyland? Which government is the best? How can I get from Dominican Republic to Columbia the fastest? Geography Answers Questions!
