disguises Alanna Klos
Main Story • “ She watched the few passengers make their way to the stairs. Then, from behind her, she heard the sound of footsteps. She panicked and fled for the exit,” Pg. 46-47 Mrs.Chen, our protagonist, is in a different subway station, a new setting, from her own. While she is surveying her surroundings she notices the other passengers are slowly dwindling away. Soon after she hears footsteps behind her she quickly exits the subway station. This reveals that Mrs.Chen does not do well in new a environments and also shows that she panics under pressure. The setting is also shown to be desolate, strange, and not very urban. The main story before her flash back is being lost.
Flashback • “; she was the last one leaving the subway platform and a teenager in a leather jacket had blocked her way. He pulled out a long knife and held it in front of his body, half-hidden by the folds of his coat. His eyes horrified her. They were pale blue, blue as she’d only seen in the eyes of those blinded by cataracts in China, yet this man was able to see, as if he were some sort of demon.” This flash back is where Mrs.Chen is the last one in her station and she is mugged by a man with pale blue demon like eyes. It reveals that our protagonist has a fear of being alone and it also shows a small hint of distain for the setting the subway because of this experience. It also reveals that the setting of the flashback sparks fear in her. Her conflict of being lost is made worse by the fear of being mugged which explains her rash desision to flee the subway platform. The authors purpose was to reveal the fear of the subway her choice to leave the station.
