  2. Main Story “The last station sped behind her. The overhead light went out, and the fluorescent flashes from the subway tunnel gleamed in the darkness behind her eyelids, pane after pane like frames of a movie.” Page 45 Mrs. Chen our protagonist of the story “Disguise” is on the subway in New York headed home. She’s on her way home from the sweatshop where she works. Mrs. Chens characteristics are the she is weak and wont stand up for herself. She has flashbacks everyone and then. As she falls asleep on the subway having another flash back she misses her stop. Once she realizes this she gets off but she cant speak English or read it. She gets lost in New York but finds her way back home with the help of a nice Chinese student.

Flashback “My only daughter,” she said, “before you pray with me this final time, you must remember this: It is said, one who is human must kneel only before the gods.” She paused, and then said fiercely, “Never before anyone else.” Page45 Summery: Mrs. Chen is about to get married but before she does her mother gives her advice. The advice is about not being a doormat. And telling her to have self confidence. Analysis: The most important character in this time and setting is Mrs. Chens mother. You can tell based on what Mrs. Chens mother said that Mrs. Chen was the same way the same way she is now. Mrs.Chen is weak, intimidated, and wont stand up for herself. The setting is right before Mrs. Chen gets married she is praying with her mother. When her mother gives her the advice it brings us clues about Mrs. Chen now to leads us to know about her characteristics.
