  3. Sparta • Sparta was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, located on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia. It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC, when the invading Dorians subjugated the local, non-Dorian population. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.

  4. Athens • Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens is one of the world's oldest cities. With its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. Athens was centered around the arts, learning and philosophy. Athens is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. Today a cosmopolitan metropolis modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2008, Athens was ranked the world's 32nd richest city by purchasing power and the 25th most expensive in a UBS study.

  5. What is It? • The Peloponnesian War was an Ancient Greek military conflict, fought by Athens and its empire against the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta. Sparta stuck to the land, while Athens took advantage of its naval supremacy. That treaty however, was soon undermined by renewed fighting in the Peloponnese. This ushered in the final phase of the war, generally referred to either as the Decelean War, or the Ionian War. In this phase, Sparta, now receiving support from Persia, supported rebellions in Athens' subject states in the Aegean Sea and Ionia, undermining Athens' empire, and, eventually, depriving the city of naval supremacy. The destruction of Athens' fleet at Aegospotami effectively ended the war, and Athens surrendered in the following year.
