My Personal Experiences • In 2002, I participated in the Virginia Youth Leadership Forum (YLF). Since then, I have been volunteering in the community and advocating for youth with developmental disabilities on many different levels. • I presented at the Virginia Transition Forum 2005 on “Creating Positive Volunteer Opportunities for Adults with Autism”. I also presented for the Autism Society of America and a local high school class. • In 2005 I was chosen to go to the National Advanced Youth Leadership Institute. While there, I went to the 15 th Anniversary of ADA celebrations and heard President Bush speak. It was the chance of a lifetime. By: Tim Moore
My Personal Experiences - continued • I serve on the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) Mentorship Committee and as a Resource Consultant. • In September of 2005, I decided to do a project for National Youth Service Day 2006. The project was called “Are You Ready? Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities”. • On September 15, 2005, I started the “ A Voice for GAP Kids” support group with help from Alicia Payne of the TBI Raiders. By: Tim Moore
My Personal Experiences - continued • On October 15, 2005 a website was created for “A Voice for GAP Kids” support group with help from Stacey Milbern. • On October 22, 2005, I presented “ Determined to Earn a Standard High School Diploma” at the Division on Career Development and Transition 13th International Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico By: Tim Moore
My Personal Experiences - continued • On February 27, 2006 a new website was created for A Voice for GAP Kids by Nilesh Trivedi. The new website allows for my full PowerPoint presentations to be viewed with no more pop-ups. • Successfully completed both my Group Action Plan for A Voice for GAP Kids and the Work Plan for the Are You Ready? Event • Continue to work on my Personal Leadership Plan, volunteer in my community and be a mentor and role model to other youth. By: Tim Moore
How my experiences have impacted my education • My volunteer experiences with three non-profit organizations lead to me being able to present at the 2005 Virginia Transition Forum. • At the presentation was a special education teacher from Deep Run High School which is in the Metro Richmond, Virginia area. • This opened the door for me to do more public speaking to other youth with disabilities. How my experiences have impacted my education-continued • I now know how to write a proposal in order to become a presenter at a conference. • I learned how technology (Computer,software PowerPoint, and a digital camera) can help. • Having two web-site was a plus although I still need a lot of help from others to maintain these websites. How my experiences have impacted my education-continued • And last but not least planning an event for National Youth Service Day 2006. • This event was called “ Are You Ready? Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities” was held on April 22, 2006 • This was a real educational experience for me. • Here are the photos from this event. Skills needed for employment • Many of the skills I learned through community service projects and mentorship opportunities are just what employers want to see in an employee. • Networking opportunities and working as part of a team are the outcome of a successful mentorship experience. Skills needed for employment – continued Working as a member of the planning committee: I learned how to: • Conduct a planning meeting (write an agenda,keep minutes of the meeting. • Write a work plan and timeline for the event • Write letters, design fliers and posters • Research information - attend public meetings and/or organizational meetings • Make a project budget • Introduce a speaker • Demonstrate how to pack a Disaster Supply Kit and a Safety & Comfort Kit.
