Engineeringthrough the ages Different Disciplines & “clever inventions”
The Concept of Engineering • Ingenious people have been developing tools and objects for thousands of years (4000 BC) • Ancient inventions like the pulley, lever, and wheel were based on basic mechanical principles.
Engineers = Clever Inventors • “Engineer” came into use in 1324 and means “a constructor of military engines” • “Engine” at the time meant military machine • “Engine” derives from the Latin word “ingenium” which means “clever invention”
Military Engineering Military Engineer • The scale of inventions changed when Military Engineers started creating machines for warfare. • Basic mechanisms like Wheels, levers, and pulleys soon became components in catapults, trebuchets, cannons, guns and cruise missiles. • Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_engineering
Civil EngineersThose who invent everything other than military warfare Tasks: Define a need or problem Design a solution Build (or manufacture) & Maintain the physical and naturally built environments. A Professional Engineer, aka PE, has many sub-disciplines.
Structural Engineering • Analyzes loads and their stresses and forces on the structure.
Mechanical Engineering • Emerged as a field during the Industrial Revolution (1750) • Applies Principles of Physics and Materials Science • Uses Heat and Mechanical Power • Analyzes, Designs, Manufactures & Maintains Mechanical Systems
Electrical Engineering • Design and Analysis of Electronic Systems • Uses electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism • Became a profession in the late 19th century • Example of Electrical Engineering Invention: Electronic Telegraph ingeniously solved the need for transmitting communication.
Chemical Engineering • Applies physical and life sciences as well as math and economics • Converts raw materials into more useful or valuable forms • Products developed: food, cosmetics, antibiotics, plastics • Used to complete the Human Genome Project
