Review Consonants М, м П, п К, к Т, т Д, д Н, н Ч, ч Vowels А, а О, о Э, э Е, е Я, я Which indicate the preceding consonant is hard? Soft?
Grammar Overview • O or A at the beginning of a word or before the stress is pronounced as a weak ‘a’ • In most cases Ч, чis pronounced as ‘ch’ like in cheese. *Exceptions such as Чтo (shto?) should be memorized.

The Soft Sign Ь The soft sign indicates that the preceding consonant is soft.

Gender of Nouns Russian nouns are classified according to grammatical gender: • Masculine • Feminine • Neuter
Gender of Nouns • Masculine nouns end in a consonant, -ь, or –й дом банк день май • Feminine nouns end in -аor –я ру́чка Ка́тя Important!: nouns that end in -а or -я and refer to male persons are masculine: Ваня, папа

Pronunciation of unstressed E Pronounce unstressed e in syllables before the stress as ‘ee’ in English ‘tree’ or ‘see’: секре́т секрета́рь семья́́ сестра́

Review of gender Russian nouns are classified according to grammatical gender: • Masculine - ends in a consonant, -ь, or -й • Feminine - ends in -а or -я • Neuter - ends in -о or –е
Review of gender Important!: nouns that end in -а or –я and refer to male persons are masculine. Don’t forget!: мой modifies a masculine noun моя́ modifies a feminine noun.
Memorize, memorize, and memorize some more! Memorize all of the vocabulary on page 19. You’ll find that you recognize many of the words!
