HS vs. College: Rules High School College Manage your own time You decide participation in extracurricular activities Class schedule varies daily, may have hrs b/w classes Arrange your own schedule Principle: Take responsibility for what you do/don’t do, noone to correct you • Time structured by others • Need permission to do extracurricular activities • Class schedule is set, same hours each day • Classes arranged for you Principle: Told what to do, corrected for out of line behavior

  4. HS vs. College: Classes High School College Study at least 2 hrs outside class for each class hour Classes range from 50 min to 3 hrs long • Little studying outside of class, ~0-2 hrs/wk • Each class same amount of time: 50min-1hr long

  5. HS vs. College: Teachers High School College Instructors don’t always check hw (use tutors!) Instructors expect you to attend office hours Must get missing info from classmates Expected to read, save & use course syllabus Instructors may not take attendance • Teachers check completed hw • Teachers available to talk before, during, after class • Teachers can give you info you missed from absences • Teachers remind you of assignments & due dates • Teachers carefully check attendance

HS vs. College: Tests & Grades High School College Few tests, cumulative, cover large amts of material Makeup tests rarely an option, need to request Instructors may not have review sessions Grades may not be given for all assignments Grades on tests/papers make up most of grade GPA below 2.0 = probation • Many tests that cover small amts of material • Makeup tests are often available • Teachers may conduct review sessions • Grades given for most assignments • Good hw grades may raise grade when tests are low • Pass w/D or higher=graduate
