  1. DIVERSITY Assignment

  2. Hispanic Americans African Americans Asian Americans Native Americans Hmong Americans Abusive/Sexual Abuse Divorced/Single-Parent & Blended Adoptive Addictive Topics

  3. Select a topic • By the end of this class period…. • 2-5 powerpoint slides that target characteristics, values, strengths, etc. of this group.

  4. Your slides should answer these questions. • How is this group different & how is this group SIMILAR to other groups? • What does this mean to professionals working with diverse populations and their families? • What does this mean to family involvement and your professional expectations?

  5. Tips for using diversity in school settings: • Listen to the other person’s point of view. Seek to understand the content of the person’s ideas and the meaning it has for that person.

  6. .Encourage each member of a collaborative group to share knowledge and perceptions about an issue, in order to establish a solid framework in which to discuss the issue.

  7. .Encourage input from as many sources as possible when deliberating upon a difficult problem, in order to take advantage of many styles, preferences, and cultural perspectives.

  8. .Appreciate perceptions and preferences different from one’s own by engaging in a dialectical conversation. Do not feel that it is necessary to change your position, or to convert the other person to your position.

  9. .When students with special needs are included in the general education classrooms, share with receiving teachers any helpful information about the students’ learning styles and preferences. But take care not to stereotype students or alter teacher expectations inappropriately.

  10. . • Everyone is not an expert at everything. Find ways to acknowledge and use suggestions from others.

  11. .Respect the rights of others to hold different beliefs. While one may not agree with others, one must assume they are acting in ways they believe appropriate.

  12. . • .Really care about others persons’ feelings and ideas, and show it through actions

  13. Reasons exist for things that people do or say, so try to discover them.
