  2. The AVID College Readiness System ACRS • Postsecondary • AVID Elective • Schoolwide AVID’s Mission AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID: 30 Years of Success • AVID is one of the most successful college readiness systems, serving: • approximately 400,000 students • almost 4,500 schools • 47 states and 16 countries and territories • AVID is a schoolwide approach that works to influence the belief system, culture and instructional strategies of the entire school campus • AVID is an intensive professional development program that makes good teachers great

Why AVID Works • Accelerates under achieving students into more rigorous courses • Teaches academic skills not targeted in other classes • Provides intensive support with in-class tutors • Creates a positive peer group for students • Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

  5. AVID students will: • Succeed in rigorous curriculum • Complete a rigorous college-preparatory path • Enter mainstream activities of the school • Increase their enrollment in four-year colleges • Become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

  7. The AVID Student Profile • Students With Academic Potential • 2.0-3.5 GPA • College potential with support • Desire and determination • Meets One or More of these Criteria • First to attend college • Historically underserved in four-year colleges • Low income • Special circumstances

AVID Graduates • 91.3 percent plan to enroll in a college or university • 58.3 percent plan to enroll in a four-year university • 33.0% percent to enroll in a two-year college Source: AVID Center Senior Data Collection System Percentages have been rounded to the nearest whole percent Since 1990, more than 65,300 AVID students have graduated from high school ready for college!

How is AVID different from what we have now? • A schoolwide approach to instruction and rigorous work that supports schoolwide/districtwide goals • A structured continuous improvement model planned and monitored by the AVID Site Team that is focused on data collection, analysis, and data driven decisions • Content area literacy materials that are aligned with national standards, focusing on writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading, to prepare all students for rigorous coursework • A student and parent support system throughout the college preparation and application process

  12. AVID in Ohio In the 2010-2011 school year there will be: • 4 school districts:South Euclid-Lyndhurst, Columbus, Berea City, Cleveland/University Heights • 8 schools • 7 Secondary • 1 Elementary • Approximately 383 students

  13. AVID in Ohio The 2010 data on the seven AVID secondary schools shows: • There are currently 23 AVID classes • 54.9% of the overall population qualifies for Free/Reduced Lunch compared with 56.4% of the AVID cohort • Of the 6,799 students, 5.6% are enrolled in AVID

AVID in Ohio Of the 127 students at middle level: • 52.7% are enrolled in algebra or higher level math • 61.4% of AVID 8th graders (2008-2009), completed an algebra or higher level math course with a ‘C’ or better • 98.2% were recommended for enrollment for a college prep track upon entering 9th grade

  17. Standards and Assessments The AVID College Readiness System is designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges and succeed in postsecondary education and training. For 30 years, this simple formula has worked: Raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

Standards and Assessments To help all students do rigorous work and meet or exceed high standards in each content area, the AVID system helps students: • Develop as readers and writers • Develop deep content knowledge • Know content specific strategies for reading, writing, thinking and talking • Develop habits, skills, and behaviors to use knowledge and skills

Effective Teachers and Principals AVID builds strong intentional leadership with well-trained staff • AVID Summer Institute, a weeklong intensive training event attended by teams from each school • School site-based training sessions focused on using AVID Path series curriculum in content area courses • Web-based seminars and online training courses on AVID principles and implementation Consistent, Supportive On-going Training & Coaching

Effective Teachers and Principals AVID builds strong intentional leadership with a strong, multi-disciplinary site team: • Monthly site team meetings to reinforce the AVID training and develop the team’s leadership capacities. • Communities of practice among their teachers, who work together to plan instructional and academic support activities for their students. • AVID Site Visits to each school – Fall and Spring

  23. Data Systems • AVID Data Collection uses a web-based system to collect data from school sites. • With the AVID System, data is used for program planning, documenting program success, and outreach. • AVID’s 11 Essentials form the core of program success.
