  2. In what situations are these used? • Run that by me again? • Who needs this? • Is it always that big? • I don’t think that’s a good idea.

  3. Say “Hello” • To a friend you meet regularly • To a friend you haven’t seen in 10 years • To a neighbour whom you don’t like • To a 6 month old baby • To someone doing what he shouldn’t • To know if someone is listening on the phone

  4. Intonation • Howwe say things, rather than what we say • Rise and fall • Emotional meaning

  5. Why is intonation important? Communication Emotions/ feelings of speaker As important as word choice Wrong intonation causes misunderstanding!

  6. Say “Goodbye” • To a member of your family departing at the airport • To someone who has been annoying you • To a child starting his very first day at school • To a boy/girl friend • To a colleague at the end of the day

  7. Say these in different ways • Do we have to speak English? • That’s a nice dress. • That sounds interesting • What have you done? • Hey, what’s the problem?

  8. Remember… • Intonation, not speed, helps you sound more natural and more like a native speaker!

  9. General Rules: Rising  Falling Rising • Statement • WH- questions • Yes/no questions

  10. Quick Practice! • I can cook, but I don’t really like it. • When do you usually watch television? • Do you play sports?

  11. Find your Group! A) Falling (statement) B) Rising (yes/no ?) C) Rising-Falling (Wh ?)

  12. Example • A: What did you do last weekend? • B: I played tennis. What about you? • C: I stayed at home. • A: Do you always stay home on the weekend? • C: No, sometimes I go swimming. • B: I do too! Do you like to swim? • A: No, not really.
