Why is intonation important? Communication Emotions/ feelings of speaker As important as word choice Wrong intonation causes misunderstanding!
Say “Goodbye” • To a member of your family departing at the airport • To someone who has been annoying you • To a child starting his very first day at school • To a boy/girl friend • To a colleague at the end of the day
Say these in different ways • Do we have to speak English? • That’s a nice dress. • That sounds interesting • What have you done? • Hey, what’s the problem?
Remember… • Intonation, not speed, helps you sound more natural and more like a native speaker!
