  3. Significance of the Suez Canal • Opened up trade routes to the western world. • Shortest link from east to west • Savings in distance and cost

  4. From Ancient to Modern Times • Britain gave up control of Egypt to France • 1936 Ruled by King Farouk • Foreign Policy remained under British Control

  5. Nasser • Resented the British influence and the weakness of his government • Over threw Farouk and became a republic • 1954-1970

  6. Significance of Nasser • The construction of the Aswan High Dam • Controlled the flooding of the Nile • Dependable water resource • Electrical power • Trade off- no flooding to deposit new soil

  7. Fought for women's rights • Gained the right to vote in 1956 • New leader Anwar Sadat signs peace treaty with Israel. First Middle Eastern country to do so. • Muslim Brotherhood- Extremists, governed solely by Islamic law.

  8. The Land and the People • Mostly desert • 70 million people live along a narrow strip of the Nile • Cotton is the primary product and export

  9. Life in Cairo • The capital and largest city • Once full of gardens now polluted and over populated • Jobs vary from factory worker to doctor • In 1829 opened up the first modern school for girls
