  1. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea By Jules Verne

  2. Part 1 In this part of the book, M. Arronax and Conseil chase what they believe to be a narwhale. They are later knocked off of their boat, as is Ned Land. They are Taken into the Nautilus which Capt. Nemo tells them they may never leave. They explore the deep with Nemo, eventually being allowed to stop on an island, as a chance to enjoy dry land. Part 2 Part Two describes the adventures of the Nautilus and the sailors aboard her. They have experiences such as confronting a giant squid, a man being attacked by a shark, Papuan natives, Antarctica, and Atlantis. They discover a long-lost shipwreck, and Nemo dies* in a maelstrom. Arronax, Conseil, and Ned escape, and the book ends with their return to dry land. Summary *Or does he?

  3. Character List • Captain Nemo- The antagonist of the book. He is Captain aboard the Nautilus, and shuns dry land. • M. Pierre Arronax* (Narrator)- A professor of submarine life at the mueseum of Paris. A “prisoner” aboard the Nautilus. • Conseil- M. Arronax’s faithful servant. Jumped off of a boat to follow him. Speaks about himself in third person. Second Prisoner of the Nautilus. • Ned Land- A Canadian whaler. Also prisoner aboard the Nautilus. • Commander Farragut- Commander of the ship Abraham Lincoln. * M. is the Abbreviation for the French word “Monsieur” and is the equivalent of Mr. in English.

  4. The Setting • Obviously this book takes place in water, in 1866, but there are many different bodies of water that the Nautilus visits, including: The Red Sea, The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans, and the Mediterranean Sea. • If they had stayed in the same body of water for the entire book, they wouldn’t have seen any different marine plants and animals, which is what keeps the book interesting. • Plus, this is what was seen as science fiction in 1866, because the modern submarine hadn’t been thought of.

  5. Vocabulary • Pinnace-a small 17th-century ship having two or three masts and a flat stern, used in northern Europe as a warship and merchant ship and as a tender. • Reverie- a daydream. • Recrimination-to accuse in return. • Polypus-A usually nonmalignant growth of tissue protruding from the mucous lining of an organ such as the nose, bladder, or intestine, often causing obstruction. Also called polyp.

  6. Themes of this Novel • Science Fiction • Marine Wildlife Protection • Friendship • Loyalty • Hunting • Curiosity

  7. Quotes • “Some four footed game, M. Arronax. All these pigeons are only side dishes, and trifles; and until I have killed an animal with cutlets, I shall not be content.”- Ned Land • If you sir, mean to face the sharks, I do not see why your faithful servant should not face them with you.- Conseil to M. Arronax • M. Arronax, I will answer you today as I did 7 months ago: whoever enters the Nautilus must never quit it.”- Nemo • “Friend Ned, answer me frankly, are you tired of being on board? Are you sorry that destiny has thrown us into Captain Nemo’s hands?”- M. Arronax

  8. Jules Verne • Jules Verne was born in 1828 in Nantes, France. He wrote 54 Sci-Fi novels, including: • Around the World in 80 Days, From the Earth to the Moon, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the sequel to this novel, The Mysterious Island. • Verne was a visionary, and foresaw many technological advances such as TV, helicopters, airplanes, and of course, the submarine.
