Government. What is Government?. The word government refers to a body of individuals with the power and authority to control and direct the affairs of a country. The government rules on behalf of society. It’s policies seek to benefit society as a whole while protecting individuals rights.

  2. What is Government? • The word government refers to a body of individuals with the power and authority to control and direct the affairs of a country. The government rules on behalf of society. It’s policies seek to benefit society as a whole while protecting individuals rights. Page 95

  3. Types of Government According to Ramsawak, et al, government maybe classified according to: • The number of leaders • The degree of power • Whether they rule for the good of the country or for their own benefits

  4. Monarchy • Government by a single person. A monarch might be a king or queen who generally inherits the power to rule. The monarch usually governs in the public interest

  5. Tyranny • Government by a single person who rules in his own private interest.

  6. Aristocracy • Government by a few people conducted in the public interest.

  7. Oligarchy • Government by a few people in their own interest

  8. Dictatorship • Government by a leader who holds power over the people by force.

  9. Autocracy • Government by one person who holds absolute power.

  10. Democracy • Government by the people who rule directly, as through town meetings and country councils or indirectly, through freely elected representatives.
