At Risk for Eating Disorders • Ethnic and socioeconomic status • Stress • Low self-esteem/perfectionist • Difficulties with communication, separation and conflict resolution w/ family • Anxiety or depressive disorder • Family history • A drive to excel in sports • Early puberty • Winter season • Sexual Abuse
Types of Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa Bulimia Nervosa The refusal to maintain a healthy body weight and an obsessive fear of gaining weight The restraining of food intake for a period of time followed by an over intake or binging period that results in feelings of guilt and low self-esteem
Facts About Eating Disorders • Of the people with eating disorders, 90 to 95 per cent are female • 63% of women feel that body weight determines how they feel • The average woman is 5’4 and 140 lbs • The average model is 5”11 and 117 lbs
Facts About Eating Disorders • Of the women in Canada between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five, an estimated 2 per cent suffer from anorexia
Signs Of Anorexia • Feeling Cold • Noticeable Weight Loss • Obsession with food and recipes • Excessive Exercise • Excuses to miss meals • Denial that you’re too thin
Signs Of Bulimia • Going to the bathroom after meals • Using laxatives, diuretics, or enemas after eating ( Diet Pills) • Smell of vomit • Excessive exercising • Eating unusually large amounts of food with no obvious change in weight
Treating Anorexia • Getting back to a healthy weight • Starting to eat more food • Changing how you think about yourself and food • Seek Professional Help • ETC
Treating Bulimia • Seek professional Help Early • Stay away from people, places, and activities that trigger the temptation to binge or purge • Talk to someone • Admit you have a problem • ETC
