Building On Synergy Connie’s Thoughts
Issues We Face • Lack of strong leadership in the consumer movement nationally • Isolation of consumer organizations who need support • Need for a stronger voice at all of our respective decision making tables • Need for a strategy to create a stronger movement
So I got to thinking… • What could the NNMH do to support groups? • What needs are paramount? • How do we at the NNMH meet the goals in our Strategic Plan on such a small budget, and few staff? • What could we do… And most importantly – Where do we find the money?
Writing the Proposal • Social Development Canada posted a call for proposals in early 2004 – an opportunity • I sat at my computer, I took his advice and wrote a proposal to build a coalition • Only 5% of the proposal submissions were supported – we made the cut • Dec. 17, 2004 we signed the contract
Making it Useful • Consumer Leaders (the Coalition) must take the lead together, it is your work that will give you ownership in the consumer voice that will be echoed nationally • Our work will be posted to the NNMH website (other groups may post them as they see fit), and will be disseminated to organizations nationally • We can use our work when lobbying in our communities, regionally, provincially, and nationally. This is OUR VOICE and united we can really make a difference
The Project • Recruit Consumer Leaders from across Canada – The Best and the Brightest • NNMH will control the costs and reporting of the project activities • The Coalition will control the direction of the project, and the project outcomes • The major components are; the Coalition as a whole, Coalition Committees, Management Committee, and Staff Support
Components • The Coalition of the whole will meet by teleconference on a monthly basis, and face to face once per year • Committees are expected to have one meeting per month via teleconference • Management Committee will be formed - I have a suggestion about this • Staff support will be made available to meetings when possible
Objective #1 • To create a coalition of mental health consumer/survivor driven organizations. This coalition will represent all provinces/territories/national and organized regions of Canada where consumer/survivor organizations, funded or not, exist.
Objective #2 • To create a management team that will oversee the duties of operational issues of the coalition and policy creation.
Objective #3 • To create a mechanism for organizational sharing of Best Practices and Lessons Learned.
Objective #4 • To identify common issues of consumer/survivor need across jurisdictions nationally
Objective #5 • To prioritize and create a work plan for addressing common issues.
Objective #6 • To implement and organize committees to carry out the work plan created to address issues of priority.
The NNMH has … • Recruited Coalition Members • Arranged the venue • Hired a Facilitator and a Evaluator • Began discussions with other national organizations about a parallel coalition of National consumer organizations – this is also an interest of Social Development Canada • Fulfilled our contractual obligations to date
Your Job This Week… • Relax, sit back, discuss issues, and work through the facilitated work plan… • Enjoy the opportunity of being able to move the consumer agenda forward • Dream about all of the possibilities we can accomplish as a team • Most importantly, relish in the opportunity at hand… we’ve all worked hard… we deserve this…
