Football Sports Medicine • What factors have increased the risk of injury over the years? • Early 1800’s • no rules • no pads • no helmets • no refs • 50 players on the field • Result - MANY serious injuries and deaths
Factors that have impacted the risk of injury • The Late 1800’s... • rules changed in 1880 • some made the game safer and others made it more dangerous • referees hired to to watch for penalties and hopefully reduce the number of injuries
Factors that have impacted the risk of injuryThe Early 1900’s • 1902 AMA declared football to be as hazardous as war with almost as many casualties • President Roosevelt vowed to abolish football • As a result of political pressure football changed dramatically in 1902 • new rules • officials introduced to the game • helmets and padding required
Medical Response to Changes in the Game • 1950’s - doctors not sympathetic to football players • bed rest, crutches or canes or just stop playing • Coaches and Doctors did not work well together; coaches began to discourage athletes from going to the doctor
Medical Response to Changes in the Game • Orthopedic surgeons were concerned about how many football players they were seeing • New associations founded to focus on athletes • The new specialty of SPORTS MEDICINE was born in the 1960’s
