  1. Great Falls Public School Student Wellness Program Highlights January 2010-August 2010

Goals: • To raise the awareness of our staff, students, and parents regarding childhood obesity • To develop a comprehensive student wellness program that rigorously addresses policy, education, and awareness • To increase the availability of healthy foods in our schools and, conversely, decrease the availably of unhealthy foods during the school day • To increase the level of physical activity among our students

To raise the awareness of our staff, students, and parents regarding child obesity • Student Wellness Website • Newsletters to parents and staff • Staff meetings • Community trainings: Foster Parent training, Family Connections Child Care training • Community Events: Safety First Rally, Community Health Fair • Community Meetings: Action for Healthy Kids, Safe Kids of Cascade County, Great Falls Public Schools Employee Wellness, Get Fit Great Falls, Healthy Living Partnerships, Safe Routes To School State Networking, Eating Disorders Task Force, Statewide Obesity Prevention Planning meetings, PTA meetings, High Risk Task Force, and the Maternal Child Health Advisory Board

To develop a comprehensive student wellness program that rigorously addresses policy, education, and awareness • Assisting teachers with meeting benchmarks that deal with health and wellness by being a guest speaker and or providing materials/ideas/support • Currently working on the Safe Routes to School Grant allowing all elementary schools to increase education and awareness of safe, active transportation to and from school

To increase the availability of healthy foods in our schools and, conversely, decrease the availably of unhealthy foods during the school day • Instituted the Approved Food Program in our community where parents, staff, and community members can easily identify individually wrapped items at local grocery stores that meet the Institute of Medicine (IOM) nutritional guidelines adopted by the Great Falls Public School • Providing a master list of approved items as well as individual grocery store lists of available items • Performing physical activities as incentives as opposed to unhealthy food parties • Providing healthy fundraising ideas • Received grant from MT Team Nutrition to provide a food show for students to test approved foods and give feedback

  6. To increase the level of physical activity among our students • Hooked on Health Events: community partners are invited to elementary schools to present 15 minute activity stations to a group of students as a part of the gym and library curriculum • Physical activity rewards for classes/grades in place of food parties • Recess In Action Program • PIR Movement in the Classroom
