  1. Lab Equipment

  2. Measurement Graduated Cylinder: Volume of Liquids Triple Beam Balance: Mass of Solids Thermometer: Temperature Metric Ruler: Length

  3. Glassware Beaker Hold liquids while they are being stirred or heated Erlenmeyer Flask

  4. Follow these steps when finding the mass of an object... 1. With nothing on the tray move all of the sliders to the zero position and make sure that the pointer is lined up with the zero mark. 2. Place the object on the tray and adjust the sliders as described in the picture above until the pointer is lined up with the zero mark again.  (Note: When the back two sliders are in a correct position they will be locked in one of the notches on the beam.) 3. Add the values that the three sliders are pointing at to determine the object's mass.

  5. 1. What is the mass of the object on the balance?

  6. 2. What is the mass of the object on the balance?

  7. 3. What is the mass of the object on the balance?

  8. 4. What is the mass of the object on the balance?

  9. Using the Graduated Cylinder

  10. When reading a graduated cylinder, 1.Place the cylinder on a flat surface 2.Bend down to get your eye even with the meniscus 3.Read the BOTTOM of the meniscus

  11. Remember to read the bottom of the meniscus

  12. What is the volume of liquid in this cylinder?

  13. What is the volume of liquid in this cylinder?

  14. What is the volume of liquid in this cylinder?

  15. This picture shows a liquid in a ten milliliter graduated cylinder. What is the volume of the liquid? • 6.6 ml • 6.8 ml • 7.0 ml • 7.2 ml

  16. The picture shows a student reading a graduated cylinder. Which change would help ensure that a more accurate measurement is made? a. The student should be seated. b. The cylinder should be held with two hands. c. The student should be wearing insulated gloves. d. The cylinder should be on a flat surface.

  17. Measuring length using a meter stick or a ruler The meter stick is divided into smaller units called centimeters. Centimeters are divided into smaller units called millimeters

  18. What is the thickness of the dime in cm? mm?

  19. Using the Thermometer Thermometers are used to measure the temperature of liquids

  20. Thermometer

  21. Thermometer Fahrenheit Celsius Some thermometers have 2 scales used to measure temperature. In science we only measure temperature in Celsius

  22. When reading a thermometer you should have 1 estimated place. What is the temperature on this thermometer? 24.0 oC

  23. Heating Source Bunsen Burner Hot Plate

  24. Proper Way to handle Hot glassware Hot Hands Beaker Tongs Proper way to handle HOT glassware

  25. Equipment to Transfer Liquids Medicine Dropper Syringes Dropper Bottles

  26. Funnel • Assists in transferring liquids to containers with smaller openings

  27. Test tube rack - holds liquids for observation or testing Test tubes Test tube brush Test tube holders

  28. Biology Lab Equipment Microscope: used to enlarge an image Dissecting scope

  29. Microscope Slides: supports an item being examined under the microscope Cover Slips: covers specimen on a slide Depression Slides

  30. Dissecting Equipment Dissecting Scissors

  31. Scalpel: used for cutting specimens being dissected Dissecting Probes: used to prod the specimen Forceps: used to hold or lift specimens

  32. Which piece of laboratory equipment is used for dissecting a flower's pistil?

  33. Safety Equipment

  34. Fire Blanket Box Fire Blanket – stop, drop, and roll Fire Extinguisher

  35. Safety Shower Eye Wash Station
