Areas of FAO expertise in GEF Focal Areas • Biodiversity • Sustainable forest management; • Biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in agriculture, forestry and fisheries; • Biosafety • Climate Change • Bioenergy; • Carbon stocks conservation in soil and forest and monitoring of carbon fluxes in land use systems (REDD + LULUCF). • International Waters • Implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries; • Ecosystem approach to sustainable fisheries management; • bi- or multi-national watershed management.
FAO Expertise in GEF FA continued... • Land Degradation • Sustainable land management; • Sustainable forest management. • POPs • Pesticide life-cycle management through implementation of the International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides; • Inventory, safeguard, elimination and prevention of obsolete pesticides; • Integrated pest management. • Adaptation • Adaptation in agriculture, fisheries, forest and grazing production systems.
Examples of projects under implementation POPs Capacity Building on Obsolete and POPs Pesticides in Eastern European Caucasus and Central Asian (EECCA) countries Africa Stockpiles Programme Land Degradation Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (with UNEP) International Waters Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (with UNEP) Sustainable Management of the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Biodiversity Conservation and Adaptive Management of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems
Lessons Learned from FAO-GEF portfolio • For effective project implementation, implementation arrangements need to be clearly defined well before a project starts; • Mobilizing co-finance should be done early in project identification and preparation; • Inclusion of a wide range of key stakeholders - government agencies communities, civil society, private sector- enhances ownership and sustainability of results
Lessons learned cont... • Collaboration among different institutions & GEF agencies working on GEF and related projects contributes to lasting results • There should be flexibility in project design to allow for timely adjustments during implementation • Lead national institution (executing agency) a big factor in achievement of project objectives
EECCA POPs Project • Implementation started in Sep 2009. The project aims to: • raise awareness; • build capacity to manage, dispose and prevent POPs; • create a platform for information exchange between the countries • Challenges/Lessons • some countries lack a large enough pool of experts which creates a challenge to nominating suitable candidates to participate in project activities • starting points and level of engagement differs substantially between countries requiring different approaches and time investment
