  3. What is a Skill? • The book Exploring Careers defines a skill as the ability to perform a task due to training and experience • The book Learning for Earning defines a skill as abilities that result from education and training

  4. Ask Yourself…. • Are people born with skills? • Can skills be learned? • Why are some skills easier for people to do than others?

  5. Two Main Categories of Skills • Personal Skills • Transferable Skills

  6. Personal Skills • Mental Skills (examples: creative writing, mathematics, memory) • Physical Skills (examples: gymnastics, aerobic exercise) • Social Skills (example: conversion)

  7. Transferable Skills • Communication skills: speaking and writing • Listening skills: sending and receiving messages • Problem-solving skills: handling conflicts • Technology skills: computer knowledge • Decision-making skills: making wise decisions • Organizing and planning skills: time management • Teamwork skills: working with team members • Adaptability skills: adjusting to change

  8. Get in Groups People!!!! • Each group will be assigned one of the transferable skills • Each group is to define and give examples of their assigned transferable skill • Each group will present their examples • The Class will give other examples of the skill

  9. On a Sheet of Notebook Paper… Complete the statement: “Knowing my skills helps me know myself better because……”
